Job description

Description

This opportunity is part of the Surrey County Council Summer Work Experience Programme which is taking place for one week in July 2024! You are applying for the week beginning 1st July and the placement will take place at Woodhatch Place, Reigate, with the Monday and Friday being based at Woodhatch Place, Reigate.

You will spend your first day with other Work Experience students at our head office in Reigate learning about the council, the services we run and the variety of careers in local government. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday will be with your placement team. Your last day everyone will come back together at Woodhatch Place to bring together everything that they have learnt during the week!

At the Economy and Growth team, we oversee the sustainable economic development of the whole of Surrey, providing valued strategic services focusing on innovation, skills, places, and greener futures for the benefit of everyone living and working in the UK's leading regional economy.

You will have the opportunity to take part in team meetings, presentations and work shadowing to learn more about our key areas of work such as cluster and innovation activity within the county, skills development and access to lifelong learning, and the green economy. We are keen for you to join any events that we may be attending or hosting that week, getting involved in our marketing and comms activities, as well as learning more about how to manage and monitor a work programme of this size. As part of the Economy & Growth team, you will gain exposure and engage with local businesses, schools and colleges, training providers, and other internal teams within the council.

This placement will help you gain a comprehensive insight into how an economic development team operates and it suitable for those looking to explore a career on economics, business support, strategic development, or place management.

As part of your application you will be asked to answer the following 3 questions:

  1. What interests you about this area of work?
  2. What skills and knowledge would you like to develop during your placement?
  3. What knowledge and skills do you have that would be relevant to this area of work?

Before applying please check that you are happy with the location/s of the placement and that you are aware that you will also need to be able to travel to Woodhatch Place, Reigate on the Monday and Friday.
