Job description

How you'll make a difference

The Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Service provides preventative, targeted and treatment interventions to young people in South Gloucestershire.

You will be working closely with our Young People’s Drug and Alcohol Specialists providing targeted intervention, including Drug and Alcohol harm reduction, at the pivotal point where a young person is facing a permanent or fixed term exclusion or managed move due to reasons associated with substance use.

You will offer young people the best opportunity to engage and re-build relationships with schools and improve young people’s wellbeing working towards a reduction in high-risk behaviours and mental health concerns. You will help organisations become more trauma-informed and improve stability at home.

This is for a limited term contract until October 2025.

What will you be doing?

  • You are responsible for providing direct intervention packages on a one-to-one basis with children, young people and families, some of whom will have a range of problems and challenges.
  • You will represent and support the needs of the young person you are working with, providing regular reports to share with schools and any education panels.
  • Where required, you will provide mediation, advice and guidance between the young person and the school.
  • You will work across South Gloucestershire visiting schools and homes.
  • It will be your responsibility to ensure that records and reports are maintained in accordance with service guidelines.
  • You will undertake assessments to determine the best intervention needed.
  • You will deliver presentations/groups work to young people and groups of professionals.

What we need from you

  • You will hold an NVQ3 in Social Care/Youth Work/Teaching or equivalent relevant qualification or be working towards an appropriate qualification related to the provision of services to children and young people.
  • You will have relevant experience of working in a similar service area, with children, young people or families requiring additional support.
  • You will have good IT skills, able to deliver presentations and can write reports and carry out risk assessments.
  • Due to the nature of the role, you must be able to demonstrate strong relationship building skills with hard to engage young people.
  • It is essential to demonstrate knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations and codes of practice relating to children and young people’s services.
  • You will be required to travel widely within the authority so you must either have a current driving licence and provide a car or have access to appropriate means of travel.

Please note that due to the nature of this role it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained for this post.
