Salary: £32,047 - £35,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Job Purpose


The BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales occupies a special role as both a BBC broadcast orchestra and the national symphony Orchestra of Wales. The Orchestra is generously supported by the Arts Council of Wales and is proud to work with an outstanding group of conductors.



As one of the six BBC Orchestras and Choirs, the Orchestra has a busy schedule of recordings, broadcasts and concerts for BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio Wales, BBC Radio Cymru, BBC Films and BBC television.



Education and Learning is also at the heart of our work, developing innovative projects to increase accessibility to classical music and engaging with communities across Wales.
This role sits within the Artistic and Learning Team of the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, reporting to the Head of Artistic Programming and Production of the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales.


With a combination of music learning expertise, extensive project management experience and fine-tuned interpersonal skills, the post holder will focus on the creation, management and delivery of BBC National Chorus of Wales live and digital activity and BBC National Orchestra of Wales learning activity, connecting BBC NOW with a diverse range of people and partners.


Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities


  • Supporting the Head of Artistic Programming and production in planning and executing the programme of the BBC National Chorus of Wales
  • Working closely with the chorus master
  • Work with the Director, Head of Artistic Programming and Production and other Learning staff to plan an annual programme of learning work for BBC NOW according to agreed strategic aims and objectives.
  • Work in collaboration with the other BBC NOW Producers in devising a coherent, distinct and above all artistically excellent programme of activity that engages as wide a range of audiences as appropriate both in live and digital content and resources.
  • Plan and lead the learning and outreach programme for assigned portfolios of the BBC NOW learning work including talent development / professional pathways, Early Years, Families including the management of key programmes such as BBC National Chorus of Wales and Composition Wales.
  • Ensure that appropriate monitoring and evaluation feedback mechanisms are in place as needed.
  • Work in collaboration with the Director and Head of Artistic Programming and Production, to pro-actively seek opportunities for the Orchestra and Chorus to work more widely in both existing business areas and new fields.
  • To develop strong working relationships with the BBC NOW and freelance musicians and support their professional development to further inspire and develops their musical skills with regard to learning and outreach.
  • To work closely with BBC NOW’s Marketing team to ensure the most appropriate and effective communications are in place to support all activity.
  • To ensure that activity with young people adheres to BBC health and safety and child protection policies as well as editorial and data protection policies.
  • To keep up to date with all new developments in relation to BBC NOW partners and contributors relating to the portfolios.
  • Work with internal and external partners to deliver programmes including BBC education initiatives such as Ten Pieces, BBC Bitesize, etc.
  • To build and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders internally & externally with organisations & networks such as Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, National Youth Arts Wales, HE organisations, Cyw/S4C, Urdd, National Music Service, ABO Chorus Managers, etc.
  • To have financial responsibility for programme budgets, working closely with the Business Manager to carefully manage expenditure and ensure the orchestra's financial resources are best utilised.
  • To represent BBC NOW at meetings with venue managers, promoters and festivals, as well as attending performances, conferences and presenting at seminars as required.
  • BBC NOW delivers work in venues all over Wales. Whilst supporting the orchestra’s and chorus’ work we don’t often work standard office hours, a level of flexibility will be required including weekend working.

Are you the right candidate?


To be successful in this role you will need the following skills:


Essential


  • Substantial relevant experience in orchestra or chorus or closely related arts environment.
  • An in-depth understanding of music in Wales and a strong commitment to music education and engagement.
  • Creativity and vision to devise and deliver new and innovative work and a clear passion and commitment to engaging people with orchestral and choral music.
  • Project Management skills and experience preferably both live and digital.
  • Knowledge of the formal education sector
  • Demonstrable experience or knowledge of action that can be taken to increase inclusivity and diversity of an organisation.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations; Child Welfare Acts and all matters relating to working with children.
  • Experience of working with and inspiring professional musicians, understanding their needs and the environment in which they are employed within the UK.
  • Confidence in managing a large workload, working to conflicting priorities/deadlines and resilience to work under pressure.
  • Experience of delivering extensive large-scale engagement projects.
  • Experience of creating and managing budgets.
  • Experience of working in partnership with a wide variety of individuals and organisations.
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and verbal. Welsh Language is extremely desirable for this role.
  • Ability to read music.
  • Outstanding administrative skills, an eye for detail and the ability to keep accurate records and forward plans with pin-point accuracy.

Desirable

  • Previous experience of digital content production including online and filmed resources and projects.
  • Experience of working with digital and broadcast teams.
  • Experience of negotiating, brokering and sustaining strategic partnerships and the ability to build strong relationships in order to act as an effective ambassador for BBC NOW.
  • The ability to drive and meet BBC insurance requirements: you may be required to drive a number of different vehicles, often on long journeys and sometimes alone. Be an experienced driver and hold a full driving licence.
