Hamilton Woods Engineering is working with a market-leading client who is looking for an experienced subcontract hardware Engineer to join their team in the Staffordshire area. Our client specialises in the nuclear sector with a focus on engineering. They are growing exponentially with a healthy order book and mainly trade with blue chip companies like BAE, Rolls Royce, etc. Comprehensive involvement in Electrical, Control & Instrumentation design, and implementation. The role encompasses the creation of Electrical and control systems with a focus on PLC-based control panels, including cabling, MCCs, Drives & Controls, Switchgear, and related EC&I equipment.
Responsibilities of Hardware engineer/ Electrical Design Engineer:
- Site surveys (1 day a month) and contribute to the creation of electrical engineering solutions for cabling.
- Design control panels and review, check, and prepare necessary calculations and designs, adhering to our clients Procedures and collaborating with relevant stakeholders.
- Travel is a requirement, with a possibility of short durations at customer sites (anticipated 1-2 days a week) for surveys and collaborative solution design.

Summary of Hardware Engineer / Electrical Design Engineer:
- Lead and drive the project team.
- Review and approve designs developed by the team.
- Ensure team compliance with agreed procedures, methods, and engineering design standards.
- Interpret and verify customer-supplied data, specifications, and drawings.
- Lead the creation/modification of Design Packs, including system drawings, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Produce client design documentation and test documentation.
- Lead site surveys, assist in Health and Safety Documentation preparation.
- Support Site acceptance testing/commissioning.
- Support the production of tender documents and cost estimates.
Essential Skills:
- Experience in control systems within the nuclear market or a regulated industry.
- Competence in field cabling systems, including surveying, route identification, cable sizing calculations, and earthing/protection.
- Competence in control panel design incorporating PLC, I/O, Comms cards, UPS's, etc.
- Computer literate with proficiency in Word, AutoCAD, and Excel.
- Methodical approach to interpreting customer requirements and delivering project documentation.
- Understanding of Full Project Lifecycle.
- Hold a current full driving license (UK or able to easily convert to full UK).
- Willingness to develop/mentor junior engineers and lead their professional progression while peer reviewing work.
Desirable Skills:
Preference will be given to candidates demonstrating expertise in at least one of the following:
- Rockwell (Control Logix)
- Siemens (PC7S, TIA Portal)
- Schneider (M580, M340)
- Experience in Motor Control Centres - Specification, procurement, installation, etc.
- Awareness/understanding of DSEAR Regulations and Hazardous area applications.
- Awareness/understanding of Functional Safety (IEC 61508/61511)
- Site Installation and Commissioning experience of control systems.
- Good understanding of BS7671 IEE 18th Edition Wiring Regs.
- Ability to work to deadlines and budgets.
- Familiarity with Databases.
- Willingness to undergo Security clearance checks due to the sensitive nature of some elements of the work undertaken.
