Main Purpose

You will be responsible for working as part of the Engineering team developing products for manufacture using new and emerging technologies to support the businesses growth plans. Key responsibilities will be to support current products with technical design changes and modifications, perform design verification work for safety critical rail products and projects normally under supervision of the Assurance Lead, with the option to support design authority being desirable. You should be capable of producing full documentation pertaining to the project / and or product and will contribute to safety cases and design for reliability reviews.


The role is focused on innovation, development and design assurance and requires a breadth and depth of technical knowledge across high integrity software development processes. You will be required to interpret formal project requirements, and develop and test new and improved products which are commercially viable. In this role strong analytical skills and report writing are required.


You will work closely with the Product Design and Development Engineering team(s) (cross-functional and multi-site) and independent Verifiers and Validators and maintain regular contact across the business with good relationships within commercial and manufacturing teams.


The role is based at our Crewe site with a hybrid working pattern in operation.


Essential Criteria

  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in Computer Science or Electronics Engineering or equivalent STEM based subject)
  • Experience of writing and testing
  • C++, C , Python (writing and verifying) for embedded applications, including hardware drivers
  • Experience of designing and testing interfaces to sensors, cameras, storage and networking devices
  • Experience of interfacing to FPGA and micro-controllers
  • Experience of developing software test cases, code reviews and static code analysis
  • Experience of writing modular, reusable, high-integrity code (eg MISRA or similar)
  • Experience of DevOps tools and continuous integration

  • Experience in software design lifecycle – from concept to release and maintenance (ideally in safety critical industry)
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Able to liaise with customers and/or other stakeholders to understand technical requirements
  • Strong customer focus
  • Passion for producing innovative design solutions
  • Excellent team player - Ability to work with engineers, managers, independent bodies, assurance teams and senior leadership level within the organisation.


Desirable

  • Experience / knowledge of rail industry standards and design assurance and V&V processes
  • Experience gained in the Railway industry, or a comparable safety critical industry sector (desirable)
  • Formal Software Development Lifecycle Knowledge for functional safety, e.g. EN 50128 or similar
  • Knowledge of creation and protection of Intellectual Property
