About the role

National Grid Interconnectors is at the forefront of delivering low carbon electricity between Great Britain and Europe. We provide the infrastructure and the market arrangements to move power to where it is most needed, providing security of supply for the countries that we connect.

 

The Power Trading Team (PTT) is a 24/7 shift trading team that provides a route to market for the National Grid Ventures Interconnector portfolio that is 6.8GW. Within this role, you'll optimise the power imbalance in UK and Europe that results from the operation of the assets, analyse the European power markets and develop projects to optimise the growing portfolio.

 

By 2030 National Grid’s interconnectors will provide enough energy to power nine million homes. That’s a job anyone can be proud of.

 

We're recruiting for either an Energy Trader or Senior Energy Trader – dependent on capability. This role is based from Warwick and you can enjoy our hybrid working from office and home. 

Key accountabilities

  • Become authorised to trade power on the EPEX-Spot power exchange – Current EPEX accreditation and M7 experience preferred.
  • Implement current trading strategy to drive value.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation is maintained.
  • Support the business to optimise planned outages.
  • Responsible for forecasting expected system imbalance in day-ahead to within-day timescales in UK and European markets.
  • Monitor and report market prices, spreads for NG interconnectors from D+1 – Year 3.
  • Identify strategies to minimise overall costs of imbalance.
  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including market participants and interconnector customers.

About you

What we do isn’t just important – it’s essential. That’s why we look to recruit experts in their field. In this case, we’re looking for someone who has:

 

  • Knowledge of either the GB BETTA or North West Europe power market.  
  • An understanding of UK & European power market fundamentals.
  • Proven analytical skills and a good level of expertise in Excel, VBA etc. (coding skills are preferred).
  • Demonstrable numerical skills.
  • Experience with a programming language i.e. Python, R, SQL is a plus.
  • Experience using Microsoft Power BI will also beneficial.
  • Leadership capability to help the team improve trading skills and develop new markets / products.
  • The ability to take Trading Manager DoA as required and make sound commercial trading decisions (Senior Energy Trader)
