The ISIS Neutron and Muon Source, at the STFC Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, is a world-leading centre for research in the physical and life sciences. The suite of 35 neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy instruments provides unique insights into the properties of materials down to the atomic scale. We facilitate research into subjects ranging from clean energy and the environment, pharmaceuticals and healthcare, through nanotechnology and materials engineering, catalysis and polymers..

The Engineering and Imaging Group at ISIS operates two world-class instruments: Engin-X and IMAT. It is responsible for delivering the ISIS neutron science programme on these instruments covering areas including engineering, cultural heritage, energy materials and a wide range of other advanced and functional materials. The group has strong links to both the academic and industrial sectors. The Group’s instruments cover the techniques of diffraction and neutron imaging. The group is composed of 6 scientific staff.

We are looking for a highly motivated and independent scientist to provide scientific and strategic leadership to the Engineering and Imaging Group. You will be expected to have an independent science programme related to an area of the group’s activity, and will have a demonstrable profile in the science community.

Key Responsibilities

As the Engineering and Imaging Group Leader you will:

• Provide scientific and strategic leadership to the Engineering and Imaging Group.
• Manage, support, and identify development opportunities for Group staff.
• Manage the group capital and resource budgets.
• Communicate and collaborate with other science groups to take forward ISIS science and instrumentation.
• Advance a personal scientific programme and collaborative projects which are strongly related to Engineering and Imaging Group capabilities.
• Ensure a safe working culture for staff and users and to review safety procedures and practices.

The below essential criteria will be assessed:

• A Ph.D. or equivalent in a physical science, life science, engineering science or related subject area.
• Excellent record of scientific impact which includes use of neutron scattering technique relevant to the group.
• Experience of management and leadership in a scientific context
• Good interpersonal and communication.
