About the business unit
The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across a number of sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design, to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.

Overview of role
Energy Networks is looking to appoint an Engineering Design Manager to support the management of a large multi voltage Detailed Design for a new substation in the UK.
The position is within the Transmission and Distribution section of the Energy Unit in Mott MacDonald.
This post will be based principally in one of our UK offices. Our portfolio of work continues to grow and we have a number of opportunities in the pipeline which offer exciting roles and responsibilities. This role will support the growth of the existing teams as part of our expansion plans.
The role is internally and externally facing. Internally you will be working with Project Managers., (who will be responsible for the commercial, contractual parts of delivery), Planners, , and discipline leads who you will manage to produce the required designs. Externally, you will be liaising with the client and contractors to ensure the design meets the clients requirements.
You will be responsible for the delivery of the Detailed Design of projects which may include strategically important and complex EHV substations, , to programme, budget and quality.
You will be able to manage design teams including HV Plant, Cable, OHL, Civil, and Protection and Control.You will be co-ordinating these discipline inputs (including health and safety, sustainability, environment, planning) to achieve a fully integrated Detailed Design. You will be using a combination of onshore and offshore resources and working closely with the Contractors
You will be responsible for:
  • Providing an overall technical lead
  • Managing design works, monitoring and reporting via programme updates, trackers & progress meetings helping to prepare schedules of work, work breakdown structures and risk schedules.
  • Ensuring all designs are appropriately reviewed and approved in line with best practice and by appropriately qualified individuals.
  • Working with the client Assurance and Operations teams to ensure the design is functional and acceptable
  • contribute to Health and safety management of design including application of CDM regulations
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment to the health and safety framework, policies and management system requirements and expectations •
  • Develop and maintain an awareness of SHE hazards and associated risks and demonstrate a commitment to eliminate or minimise those risks •
  • Work with the resource manager to expand the team.
  • Work with the existing team to improve/implement efficient design processes
  • Work with the wider team to ensure designs are sustainable and support environmental and planning aspects of the works
  • Deal with any issues arising from the construction teams.

You will be assisted by, and overview the works of, the discipline specific leads and their teams, a nominated Principal Designer, Civil and Electrical integration engineers (including site works).
Candidate Specification:
  • Demonstrable experience of producing Detailed Design within a multidisciplinary environment
  • Engineering Degree (preferably Electrical) and/or suitable experience.
  • A collaborative approach to working and your day to day interactions
  • UK based EHV experience would be beneficial
  • Delivering Detailed Designs utilising the latest BiM/ Digital tools
