We are delighted to advertise this training opportunity, which provides automatic progression to a full-time, permanent Environmental Health Practioner position within our Food Safety and Standards Team. Automatic progression can be achieved for EH Students on obtaining your degree and EH Graduates on successfully completing a programme of practical training, evidence portfolio and professional interview to register with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH).


Salary: Competitive salary, fair and transparent pay structure, and nationally agreed annual pay awards. Career growth pathways, ranging from Grade 5 to Grade 6, dependant on qualification and experience of the successful candidates.


  • Environmental Health Student: Grade 5 - £24,294 - £25,545 pro rata (£12.59 - £13.24 per hour, pro rata)

As an Environmental Health Student, you are likely to be in full or part-time education. The hourly rate range quoted above will be paid on a pro rata basis, during any placements with our Service, for example, when working to support your studies during University holidays or for part-time students, when not attending college, virtually or otherwise.


This opportunity will enable you to gain valuable and practical work experience, and to get a head start on completing the associated evidence portfolio, while generating some income while you continue your Environmental Health studies.

Our training contract is designed to be mutually beneficial, supporting continuity and stability, whilst setting you on a solid path towards a successful career in Environmental Health.


  • Environmental Health Graduate: Grade 6 - £25,979 - £28,770 pro rata
    (£13.47 - £14.91 per hour, pro rata)

As an Environmental Health Graduate, you should be ready to commence a permanent placement with our Public Protection Service, gaining necessary experience across all areas of Environmental Health and kick-start your career in this field. This is an excellent opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills gained during your studies in a real-world setting. It will allow you to start building practical experience, which is invaluable for your professional development on your path to becoming a fully qualified Environmental Health Practitioner This hands-on experience will not only enhance your understanding of Environmental Health practices but also provide you with valuable insights into the day-to-day operations of the Service.


Career Progression: Upon successful completion of your Environmental Health Degree and completing a programme of training to achieve professional status as a Registered Environmental Health Practitioner, you will progress to the role of Environmental Health Practitioner within our Food Safety and Standards Team.

What We're Looking For:


  • An Environmental Health BSc (Hons) degree or MSc degree (for Grade 6 role); or enrolment on an accredited MSc or BSc (Hons) degree course in Environmental Health (for Grade 5 role). At this time, applications from Environmental Health Students are sought from those in the final year of the degree course.
  • Drive to achieve Registered Environmental Health Practitioner status and commitment towards completion of the EHP Portfolio
  • Aptitude for investigative techniques and IT proficiency
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex information clearly
  • Organised, adaptable, and capable of balancing priorities effectively
  • Particular interest in food safety and standards.
