A rewarding career that will deliver change. Together, we can help Britain achieve net zero.

Join our Environmental Ranger Apprenticeship and you can make an immediate impact, powering the nation today whilst helping to build a sustainable energy future for tomorrow.

“One of the main reasons I applied for the apprenticeship was because I wanted to do something to help tackle the climate emergency. This apprenticeship is the best career decision I ever made”

Jamie, current EDF Renewables apprentice

What is the Environmental Ranger Apprenticeship programme:

We’re recruiting for an apprentice to join our EDF Renewables Asset Management Environmental Team. This role is fundamental to the success of the business, ensuring that there will be highly skilled members of the team into the future.

Over two years, you’ll learn from experts, gaining valuable experience while studying for a HNC qualification. You can expect on-the-job training and as well as time at college to supplement your learning experience. On the programme, you'll gain a HNC in Wildlife & Conservation Management at SCQF Level 7.

You will support our Dornell Wind Farm Ranger Service and the wider EDF Renewables Asset Operations Consents & Environmental Team. You will get the chance to gain experience in nature conservation, ecology, outdoor recreation, access management and delivering environmental based education. Whilst being a part of these exciting projects core skills such as IT, teamwork and communications will also be developed.

What salary and benefits are we offering you?

  • Starting salary of £16,500 plus excellent benefits
  • 25 days’ annual leave
  • Flexible benefits package
  • Wellbeing, physical and mental health support services
  • Outward Bound programme – team building excursion prior to starting in September
  • A dedicated Early Careers Programme Lead for your scheme, as well as the support of a Line Manager and Buddy

Training, development and support for you:

During your apprenticeship, you'll learn about all aspects of the countryside, including nature, conservation and wildlife as well as ecology, recreation, access and visitor management.

The HNC course also includes practical experiences and examples through visits to reserves, country parks and wildlife sites.

Example modules include:

  • Biodiversity Conservation
  • Ecology and Ecosystems
  • Environmental Awareness
  • Classification and Identification of Living Organisms
  • Geology and Geomorphology

The apprenticeship provides an opportunity to gain an exciting and practical HNC qualification that provides a baseline of knowledge for a number of countryside-based careers. EDF will support you with the hands-on experience of working day to day with our rangers and other environmental professionals.

This will enhance the skills and experience for you, preparing you for a future career in a rural setting. The future is yours for the taking!

Where you’ll work:

You will be predominately based at our Dornell Ranger Service office near Dufftown, Moray, while also travelling to other EDF-R offices and operational sites to gain experience, with release periods to college, of which accommodation will be provided if required.

To join our team you'll need:

  • 1 Higher at C in a relevant subject.
  • Applicants should be able to offer National 5 (A-C) or equivalent pass in English (for literacy) and Maths (for numeracy).
  • Alternative entry qualifications such as a related National Certificate, are also accepted.
  • Enthusiasm for learning will be highly valued.
  • Ability to demonstrate passion for the net zero journey, environmental management and rural skills.
  • Clear ambition to develop a career within EDF Renewables.
  • Ability to engage people at all levels and work within a team.
  • Interest in travelling to other parts of the UK to gain new experiences and skills.
  • You should also hold, or be happy to work towards gaining, a valid UK driving license.

Our Assessment Centre will be held on Thursday the 25th of April. The location will be confirmed closer to the time.
