Summary of role
We have a unique opportunity for a passionate individual who is committed to driving forward equality, diversity and inclusion within Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) and within our communities, partner organisations and stakeholders to ensure we deliver the best service to the public.
Some of the things you’ll be doing
Policy & Legislation:
• Contribute to the development of policies, processes, and projects aligned with Diversity, Inclusion, Culture & Equality (DICE) requirements within the Service Plan, People Services Strategy, and cultural improvement plan.
• Conduct research and horizon-scanning to stay informed about relevant legislation and public sector initiatives.
• Assist in completing People Impact Assessments (PIAs) and provide advice on potential impacts across protected characteristics.
Advisory & Partnerships:
• Provide advice and respond to queries from staff, the public, and stakeholders on DICE issues. Establish and maintain positive relationships with staff, including visiting fire stations and other work locations.
• Build relationships with key organisations and communities to support community fire safety through engagement and partnership working.
• Attend meetings and events to share best practices, promoting AF&RS's role and objectives.
Community Engagement & Positive Action:
• Collaborate with staff, external partners, and community groups to contribute to positive action and community engagement.
• Raise awareness of our job vacancies and aim to increase the diversity of applications. Identify and attend relevant community events ensuring alignment with our Service Plan and People Strategy.
Staff Networks & Training:
• Contribute to the establishment of staff network meetings, providing advice and direction to support a diverse and inclusive workplace culture. Develop and deliver DICE training for staff and managers.
Support & Administration:
• Assist with the smooth running of the team. Provide support, development, mentoring, advice, and tools to enable managers to meet their DICE responsibilities.
Data Analysis:
• Collect, collate, and present DICE data and statistics as required.
What we will need from you
Essential:
• Demonstrated experience in successfully delivering positive culture change within an organisation.
• Proven ability to design, develop, and deliver effective training packages related to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
• Thorough understanding of the Equality Act and its implications for organisational practices.
• Sound comprehension of the principles and benefits associated with diversity, inclusion, and equity.
• Strong interpersonal skills with a track record of establishing and maintaining positive working relationships.
• Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to engage with diverse stakeholders.
• Proficient in using the Microsoft Office suite, particularly Excel, to interpret and present data effectively.
• Hold a current driving license or have the ability to arrange suitable alternative transport to travel to various work locations.
Desirable:
• Knowledge of issues affecting communities in the geographical covered by AF&RS.
• Experience of policy production and review.
• Experience of working in the Public Sector.

With effect from July 2023 legislation was amended to enable all Fire & Rescue Services to undertake standard DBS checks for all employees. All job roles require a standard DBS check, with certain defined roles requiring an enhanced check. These will be renewed throughout employment.
