Pay Range
$6,100 - $7,340 Monthly
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for Academic Graduate Appointee to participate in a variety of activities in the Environment, Safety and Health (ES&H) Directorate. As part of a multi-disciplinary team within the ES&H Directorate, you will provide support and be expected to participate in ES&H activities. You will complete a project, or series of projects, that combine hands-on experience with technical knowledge. You will interact with all levels of personnel including managers, operations personnel, experimenters, technicians, and other personnel that may be outside the ES&H Directorate.
You will

  • Gather and analyze data or information, provide input to, and prepare various documents (e.g., develop procedures, reports, calculations, or reports and presentations). Participate in safety inspections of work areas. Perform or assist in assessments of, or research in, ES&H Directorate areas.
  • Perform technical/scientific assignments at a basic to moderate degree of complexity. Apply effective analytical and problem-solving skills. Conduct, analyze, and present data from operational, laboratory, research, and/or by reviewing scientific and technical literature and experimental techniques to develop and improve the understanding of relevant topics. For example, collaborate with safety professionals to support, develop, or implement safety programs.
  • Work safely and efficiently on multiple projects simultaneously. Work under general guidance of staff, in areas such as analytical services and instrumentation, data sampling and information management, technical field operations, health services, business operations and health information management, behavioral health and employee assistance, ergonomics, health care, health and productivity, human and operational performance, nuclear safety (e.g., safety analysis, nuclear criticality safety), packaging and transportation safety, research and development, safety engineering, work planning and control, occupational safety and health, biosafety and bio governance, environmental protection, occupational medicine, radiation protection (e.g., health physics, dosimetry), worker safety and health, integrated safety teams, directorate operations (e.g., training) to resolve technical, process, and/or operational problems.
  • Present informal progress reports to supervisor/mentor on a regular basis. Create slides for presentations to staff, collaborators, and management within and outside ES&H.
  • Attend relevant seminars and/or conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Chemical, Nuclear, Electrical, Environmental, Civil, Architectural), Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physical Sciences (e.g., Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science), Explosive safety, Laser safety or optics, public health, health physics, nutrition, industrial hygiene, occupational safety or equivalent program.
  • Experience in science, engineering, math, statistics, computer science, public health, nutrition, industrial hygiene, or occupational safety demonstrated by coursework, training, and/or work experience.
  • Ability to apply scientific methods to solve a defined problem.
  • Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, document analyses and prepare, present and explain technical information and publications.
  • Initiative, interpersonal skills, creativity, and ability to work in a collaborative,
  • multidisciplinary team environment. Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment.
     
  • Ability to multitask and handle multiple projects with competing needs in a fast-paced
  • Environment. Ability to support ongoing activities where at times the work may not be well defined.

Qualifications We Desire

    • Ability to apply basic and fundamental safety or environmental concepts in a work environment.
    • Experience in research, manufacturing, laboratory, and/or fieldwork-type work settings.
    • Working knowledge of topics in ES&H Directorate areas (e.g., OSHA regulations and ANSI Standards as applicable to general industry, construction, and research and development environments, e.g., construction, fall protection, lock out tag out, electrical safety, hoisting and rigging, forklifts, ladders, machine guarding).
    • Familiarity with LLNL facilities, programs, and their operations.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. Also, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship.
