Watershed is looking for an Executive Producer to work on their new Immersive Arts programme, which will commission and support a new wave of artists to make and share extraordinary immersive work.
Purpose of job
Immersive Arts will convene, commission and support a new wave of artists to make and share extraordinary immersive work. The programme brings together two universities, four producing venues and UK-wide expertise from organisations with specialist expertise around inclusion, training, showcasing and research. The partners – Pervasive Media Studio (Watershed, UWE Bristol, University of Bristol, England), Wales Millennium Centre (Wales), Nerve Centre (Northern Ireland), Cryptic (Scotland), Crossover Labs, Unlimited, XR Diversity Initiative and Immerse UK – are united by an ongoing commitment to support artists and reach audiences while building equity in the sector.
In three years, we will commission over 200 artists to engage, experiment and explore the possibilities of immersive technology. We will create inclusive opportunities for artists of all backgrounds, from across the four nations and multiple languages of the UK to bring their creativity to the fore. Through an integrated programme of research, we will capture and share insight and learning about what works best for the wider sector. We will establish a powerful network of practice and exhibition within which a distinctive UK Immersive Arts sector can emerge and flourish.
Immersive Arts is supported by a new funding consortium; the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Arts Council England, Arts Council Scotland, Arts Council Northern Ireland, and Creative Scotland. Our programme aims to act as a creative catalyst, raising profile and ambition, and generating a culture in three years that becomes the foundation for the next twenty.

Hours: Part-time
Contract type: Fixed Term – Contract runs until 31 January 2027 – 4 days per week – Pro Rata
Location: Hybrid working, will be required to travel. With occasional requirement for in person working in Bristol.
Main responsibilities
- Leading a collaborative process of programme design and iteration that meets the programme aims, delivers against agreed targets and embodies our shared values.
- Advocating for the partnership and our community at industry events and through editorial at a national and international level.
- Connecting to other organisations, venues, producers and festivals to build relationships across the sector and ensure that our programme offers distinct value into the ecosystem.
- Maintaining an overview of the programme to ensure it is not only scheduled and delivered effectively but that it is full of care and enables participation from artists and audiences of all backgrounds.
- Chairing the Operations Group (made up of the Producing, Communication and Administration team from each producing partner and the Researcher Fellows/Assistants); striving to empower group responsibility and peer support wherever possible.
- Attending and reporting to the Management Group.
- Working proactively to enable internal and external knowledge exchange, ensuring that programme learning is shared for the wider benefit of the sector.
- Budget management and income generation against agreed targets, including securing industry sponsorship.
Key performance indicators
- The programme has a good reputation with artists and the wider cultural sector(s); opportunities for artists are nationally and internationally significant and locally inclusive.
- Producers understand the mission of the programme and how they fit within it; they have a good understanding of the work of the other partners.
- Producers are equipped to ensure that the programme is well delivered; including production plans, contracting, risk assessments, complaints procedures, health and safety, budgets and cash flow.
- The principles of the programme (and Watershed) are embodied and there is active learning where mistakes are made.
The programme meets its aims and is delivered on time and to budget.
Essential criteria
- Extensive experience of working in, and strong networks across, the immersive industries
- Experience of working at a strategic level to produce projects, from early stage all the way through to realisation.
- Experience of leading a collaborative working process and building and supporting an engaged community of practice.
- Able to communicate clearly – presentations and conversations with stakeholders form a significant part of the role.
- Able to spot funding opportunities and make successful proposals to secure resources.
