At Cancer Research UK, we exist to beat cancer.

We are professionals with purpose, beating cancer every day. But we need to go much further and much faster. That's why we're looking for someone talented, someone who wants to develop their skills, someone like you.

We have an exciting opportunity to become the Programme Lead for the Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres (ECMC) Programme Office. In this role you will lead a team to drive the strategic and operational development of the ECMC Network to ensure that the UK is at the forefront of experimental medicine oncology research and a destination of choice for early phase oncology clinical trials and experimental medicine.

About the ECMC Network

The Experimental Cancer Medicine Centres (ECMC) Network is jointly funded by Cancer Research UK, the health departments of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales and the Little Princess trust. It is made up of 17 adult centres and 12 paediatric locations across the UK that conduct early phase trials and associated translational research and each ECMC has unique and world leading expertise within early phase clinical research. The Programme Office is housed by CRUK and supports the network in a variety of ways.

Collaboration across the ECMC network gives us the edge in generating new treatments for cancer.

What will I be doing?

  • Work alongside the Head of Clinical Research and the ECMC Network Chair in developing network-level strategies and oversee the delivery of those strategies across the ECMCs.

  • Ensure patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) and equality and diversity is embedded in all aspects of the ECMCs work and considered as part of the decisions taken.

  • Ensure the ongoing delivery of an effective governance structure for the ECMC Network and associated Groups and Fora, including appropriate reporting metrics and review processes.

  • Oversee the development and implementation of the strategy to drive industry engagement with the networks.

  • Deliver projects that accelerate innovative translational research and improve delivery of early phase clinical cancer research in the UK, focused around the ECMC network, working in collaboration with colleagues in other teams.

  • Provide a point of knowledge and expertise in early phase clinical research delivery across the UK, building effective engagement with organisations involved in this and managing key relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.

What skills are you looking for?

  • An experienced team leader with deep understanding of the UK biomedical research sector and early phase clinical research, including the environment for clinical research delivery.

  • Able to present an exciting and motivating ambition for your team, and be accountable for their delivery.

  • An excellent communicator, able to manage relationships and build credibility with multiple stakeholders both internally and externally.

  • Able to feed into the development of strategic, forward-looking plans and lead on their implementation; specify priorities for the team and use data to help inform direction of travel.

  • Able to negotiate and manage sensitive and crucial relationships with other organisations, government departments and academics.

  • Able to manage a team and deliver objectives within an agreed budget.

  • Experience of programme management with significant investment, risk and/ or complexity.

What will I gain?

Every one of our employees contributes to our progress and is supporting our work to beat cancer. We think that's impressive.

In return, we make sure you are supported by a generous benefits package, a wide range of career and personal development opportunities and high-quality tools, policies, and processes to enable you to do your job well.

Our benefits package includes a substantial retirement plan, a generous and flexible leave allowance, discounts on anything from travel to technology, gym membership, and much more.

We don't forget people have lives outside of work too and so we actively encourage a flexible working culture.

Our work - from funding cutting-edge research to developing public policy - will change the world. It's exciting to be part of our team.

How do I apply?

We operate an anonymised shortlisting process in our commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. CVs are required for all applications; but we won't be able to view them until we invite you for an interview. Instead, we ask you to complete the work history section of the online application form for us to be able to assess you quickly, fairly, and objectively.
