Description

The Horniman welcomes a wide range of people to the museum each year including many young families. Family Crafts volunteers support with devise and delivery of weekly Saturday drop-in craft workshops inspired by the Museum’s collections, themes and values. The workshop enables families to have a more creative and playful experience at the Museum. All necessary training is given – no prior experience is needed, however an interest and understanding in crafts and engaging with families would be appreciated.

 

Tasks include:

 

·        Setting up the room prior to the beginning of the session

·        Providing a warm and friendly welcome

·        Explaining the activities provided and handing out materials.

·        Providing help to some families, if needed

·        Ensuring a positive family experience and encouraging all to take part.

·        Restocking materials and cleaning where necessary

·        Ensuring the safety of children and making sure parents are present at all times.

·        Tidying up and putting materials away at the end of the session

·        Craft activities research and preparation.

·        Supporting family events e.g., Spring fair, Halloween Fair etc.

 

Level of commitment and conditions

This is a regular, ongoing role. We are looking for a minimum 4-month commitment two Saturdays a month, from 12.30pm to 4.30pm.

 

Due to the nature of the role, volunteers will be asked to provide an enhanced DBS (police check) certificate. The museum will pay and arrange for this.

 

This role would suit someone who:

·        Has an interest in engaging with children and families.

·        Has an interest in crafts making.

·        Has good communication skills and can adapt their language based on the audience age, needs and interests.

·        Understands good customer service and is willing to be helpful.

·        Has an interest in the Horniman Museum’s collections

 

Minimum age requirement:

This role is open to all applicant 18 and over.

 

The museum offers volunteers:

·        Opportunities for personal development in a supportive learning environment

·        Reimbursement of travel expenses within Greater London

·        Special events for volunteers including behind-the-scenes talks and socials.

·        A 20% discount at the café and the shop

·        Free entry to paid areas of the museum.
