Job description

We have some fantastic opportunities to provide support to children and families in the Child Care Assessment Team within the Social Services and Housing directorate.


The Child Care Assessment Team is a statutory team that undertakes child protection and family support work with families under the remit of the Social Services and Well Being Act (Wales) Act 2014 and related codes of practice.


A Child Care Practitioner will undertake simple assessments to assess the needs of the children to identify if any needs can be met through the provision of information, advice and assistance. The assessment will include liaising with other professionals and developing a plan for the family, referring to appropriate services and undertaking direct work with the child/ren/young person.

The Child Care Practitioner will be part of a duty rota when they will be working on the duty desk receiving calls from members of the public and professionals and receiving referrals and ensuring they are promptly entered onto the Care First system and completing tasks as directed by the Managers.


The Child Care Practitioner will work closely with the social workers to ensure that the appropriate support is being provided to the children and their families, this will include co-working with social workers and undertaking tasks and work that is assigned by the social worker.


The Child Care Practitioner will receive regular supervision to ensure that they are able to discuss the assessments and work they are undertaking and are guided and advised accordingly.

We provide a supportive working structure across all of our social care teams, ensuring you have all you need to perform to the best of your abilities, whilst doing a job you love. Supporting this team would provide opportunities to contribute directly to the work and for personal development and further training opportunities will be available.


Successful applicants will have five GCSEs Grade C or equivalent and have previous experience of working with children and families. An NVQ3 or above in Social Care or equivalent would be favourable.
