Job description

The Business & Opportunity:

Lyons Recruitment are delighted to be working in partnership with an exciting owner-managed SME, operating in the renewable energy sector. They are passionate and driven in accelerating green energy alternatives in light of the current global energy crisis. With recent investment from venture capitalists, this is a fantastic opportunity to join when they are at the cusp of something very exciting with realistic growth plans.

As Financial Modeller, you will take responsibility for designing, building, and maintaining financial models for the business and projects to assist in financial planning, decision making and analysis activities.

You’ll be the sounding board for new ideas and have the opportunity to make a real impact in the business future plans as they continue to grow.

They offer a truly hybrid approach, where you will ideally be office based once or twice per week (with some flexibility if required). Their main head office is in the centre of York, which offers a non-corporate and sociable environment.

Specific Requirement:

With this being a newly created role, you will have some freedom to tailor it as you wish, but within the following framework…

  • Model Development: Design, build, and maintain financial models to analyse and forecast business performance and project viability. This would be for the group as a whole as well as for individual scenario analysis of Battery Energy Storage System and Solar PV projects. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather relevant financial data and assumptions, particularly with the grid engineering team to understand the technical requirements on projects. You will ensure accuracy, consistency and reliability of financial models.
  • Financial Analysis: Conduct in-depth financial analysis to support strategic decision-making. Also, evaluate investment opportunities, mergers, acquisitions, and other financial transactions as required. Plus, you will assess the impact of different scenarios on the company's financial performance.
  • Budgeting and Forecasting: Assist in the development of annual budgets and financial forecasts, primarily from the individual project models and transactions. You will also provide insights and recommendations based on a range of commercial scenarios to improve budgeting and forecasting accuracy.
  • Reporting: Prepare and present financial reports to senior management and other stakeholders, and communicate key findings and recommendations based on financial analysis.
  • Data Management: Collect, organise, and validate financial data from various sources, whilst also maintain data integrity and ensure the accuracy of input data into financial models.
  • Risk Assessment: Evaluate financial risks and opportunities, providing insights into potential impacts. This will include developing stress testing scenarios to assess the resilience of financial models.
  • Continuous Improvement: Stay informed about industry trends and regulations for BESS and Solar PV. And ensure best practices in financial modelling through CPD, identifying and implementing improvements to existing financial models and processes.

Skills & Experience required:

  • Proven experience in financial modelling and analysis, ideally from a similar industry.
  • Excellent Excel skills and proficiency using financial modelling tools and supporting software, together with ERP systems.
  • Knowledge of the renewable industry-specific regulations and financial reporting standards.
  • An understanding of the commercials and financials of BESS and Solar PV projects would be highly beneficial.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial concepts.
  • Either a recognised accounting qualification or degree in Finance, Accounting or Economics will prove advantageous.
  • A Banking or M&A background would also provide you with the relevant and transferable skills.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Programming skills (e.g., VBA, Python) would be helpful.
  • Ability to work autonomously and dynamically with minimal supervision.

What’s on Offer:

  • A starting salary of between £55,000 - £70,000 depending on experience.
  • Annual Bonus.
  • Healthcare for entire family.
  • 25 days annual leave (plus public holidays), increasing with length of service.
  • A truly hybrid approach. Ideally attend their York office occasionally. However, there’s also some flexibility in either attending their Edinburgh office or being predominantly based remotely.

Next Steps:

Interviews are to be conducted imminently; hence you are advised to apply at your earliest convenience.

N.B. Lyons Recruitment have been strictly retained on an exclusive basis, hence any direct or other agency applications will be disregarded.
