Fire Safety Adviser
Science and Technology Facilities Council
Salary: GBP48,802 to GBP53,682 per annum
Hours: Full time
Contract Type: Permanent
Location: Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), Didcot, Oxfordshire, OX11 0QX

We wish to recruit a third Fire Safety Adviser to provide advice and assist in maintaining a growing portfolio of fire risk assessments for a large and expanding site of over 100 buildings at the RAL site. We will actively support the successful candidate's development, as a rounded Fire Safety professional.
As part of a small team of Fire Safety professionals, this is a busy, varied and exciting role working with all departments on site, giving great opportunities to use and develop your skills to make a difference to UK science.
The main areas of the role will be to:
Provide safety advice in respect to Fire Safety legislation to all staff, tenants, contractors, visitors and facility users
Collaborate with the existing fire team, provide specialist Fire Safety advice to those involved in building modification, and the design and construction of new buildings (including the handover process prior to sign off)
Write and maintain Fire Risk Assessments in buildings of various complexity
Advise on fire signage and Fire Safety equipment
Support a programme of fire drills
Support development of STFC's SHE Management System Codes, and audit their effectiveness
Prepare and deliver Fire Safety training
Support the investigation of fires, fire false alarms and related fire incidents
Prepare and present reports and recommendations to safety committees on Fire Safety matters
Establish good working relationships with local fire and rescue and emergency services
The following criteria will be assessed at Shortlisting:
Fire safety knowledge and experience with at least technician grade membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) or equivalents
The candidate will hold a Level 4 Fire Safety Certificate, or equivalent.
A working knowledge of current and forthcoming changes to UK Building Regulations and Fire Safety legislation
Strong practical experience of undertaking fire risk assessments, including in large and complex buildings
Proactive with a high degree of self-motivation and independence, able to deliver under pressure and against tight deadlines
Previous experience in the development and delivery of engaging training courses in Fire Safety
Excellent IT skills including MS Office and CAD drawing systems
