A Vacancy at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
The University Hospitals of Leicester Specialist Palliative Care team are inviting applications for IMT3-level posts in Palliative care; each for 12 months, August 2024 – August 2025. Applications are welcome for people who wish to work less than full time and the job plan will be adjusted accordingly. There are no on call responsibilities.
There may be an additional opportunity to spend up to three months at LOROS working on the inpatient unit. This post will include one day a week working with the palliative care research team to develop skills in research methodology and involvement in local research projects. There is the opportunity to consolidate and develop other skills through allocated non-clinical time to undertake governance activities.
This post requiresa minimum of four years’ experience as a postgraduate doctor, with at least two of those years working within the NHS.It is ideal for trainees who wish to develop competencies and skills in palliative care to support application for a specialty training post in Palliative Medicine or one of the many other medical, surgical and emergency specialties where these skills are regularly utilised. Each post holder will be allocated an Educational Supervisor and expected to maintain an e-portfolio.
You would join a team of Consultants, Palliative Medicine Registrars, IMT doctors and Clinical Nurse Specialists who deliver Palliative Care across Leicester’s hospitals and LOROS hospice.

These IMT3 level roles within Palliative Care provide experience working with a specialist team to deliver Palliative Care in the acute hospital settling, with a potential opportunity to rotate for three months into the hospice setting at the local hospice LOROS depending on the service requirements and the experience of the successful applicant.
Key clinical duties at UHL:
1. Participate in the face-face holistic assessment and management of hospital inpatients who have been referred to the hospital Specialist Palliative Care Team
2. Prescribing of appropriate palliative and anticipatory medications to manage common symptoms of patients
3. Undertake discussions with patients and families, including advance care planning when appropriate.
4. Provide clinical supervision of Junior doctors on medical wards about palliative care issues
5. Provide senior medical input into the Palliative Care Team across UHL.
6. Help ensure safe and effective care when people move between different care settings, by adding to discharge letters, making appropriate referrals and providing guidance about medicine authorisations.
Key clinical duties at LOROS hospice include:
1. Daily assessment and review of the ward inpatients, and liaising with the wider Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) about their care and management
2. Providing first line medical advice and senior review of new admissions to LOROS hospice
3. Contributing to a weekly MDT meeting for people on the LOROS inpatient ward
4. Leading a daily virtual ward MDT helping to triage
5. Responding to urgent situations as they arise and liaise with other healthcare professionals in community and acute setting if needed. This will involve working closely with the ICSPC team, primary care colleagues, as well as LOROS and UHL teams
6. Interpretation of blood and other investigations to help guide management
7. Prescribing of appropriate palliative and end of life medications to manage common symptoms of patients with access to specialist palliative support as needed
8. Contemporaneous record keeping in electronic clinical systems including SystmOne and Nerve Centre.
