Job description

The Office of Health Economics (OHE) and London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) Department for Health Policy seek candidates for a full-time MPhil/Ph.D. studentship starting in September 2024.  OHE, established in 1962 and a registered charity since 2016, conducts reputable research in pharmaceutical economics, health technology appraisal, healthcare financing, and related statistical issues. Collaborating with public, charity, and private sectors, both nationally and internationally, OHE is known for its objective, high-quality work.  The LSE Department for Health Policy focuses on multidisciplinary teaching in health policy, economics, and management. Dedicated to influencing global health policy, the department conducts rigorous social science research to address health challenges. The PhD program, an integral part of LSE, provides a multidisciplinary approach, incorporating economics, social policy, and public policy perspectives.  Principal Objectives / Responsibilities The successful candidate is expected to enrol in the Department of Health Policy's MPhil/Ph.D. program and spend approximately one day a week at OHE during the first year, increasing to about 50% thereafter. At LSE, responsibilities include regular meetings with Ph.D. supervisors, taking relevant courses, attending seminars, and active participation in the department's academic life.  While at OHE, the Ph.D. student will update their OHE advisors on research progress, present work to the team, engage with OHE staff, and contribute to OHE's research activities. Tasks include supporting literature reviews, data collection, attending OHE events, participating in training, and engaging in activities aligned with the Ph.D. topic. This dual affiliation provides educational benefits and direct relevance to the Ph.D. research.  Funding The 3-year award will cover full-time Home LSE tuition fees and an annual stipend of £20,622.  Experience and Skill Set  Applicants need an economics background and must meet LSE's Ph.D. application requirements, with a master's degree equivalent to an LSE high merit grade. This entails an overall average of at least 65% in the MSc (or equivalent) and a minimum of 65% in the dissertation (or equivalent). Conditional offers for the MPhil/Ph.D. program are contingent on meeting these criteria.  Regarding experience and skills, while applicants are not required to possess expertise in each topic, they must demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to equality and diversity.  The OHE is committed to equality of opportunity. Anyone will be considered for a role within our business, and we will welcome applications from all candidates regardless of background.  Application process  In order to be considered for each studentship, applicants should apply for the MPhil/Ph.D.programme in the Department of Health Policy at the LSE, via the 'Apply' button above, marking their application as the “OHE Ph.D. Studentship”.  The doctoral student will be required to conduct research on the life sciences related to OHE's line of interest. As part of the application process, applicants will be asked to submit a research proposal. This is a 1,500-word document explaining - in light of the topic focus outlined for each studentship - the research proposed to undertake during the studentship. In addition to submitting the application to LSE, a letter of intent and the research proposal should be sent to Mireia Jofre-Bonet at OHE (mjofre-bonet@ohe.org).  The deadline for applications for the Ph.D. Studentship is 25 of April 2023.  Informal enquiries  Informal enquiries should be sent to Andrew Street (a.street@lse.ac.uk) and/or Mireia Jofre-Bonet (mjofre-bonet@ohe.org).
