Main purposeof job
Tobe responsible to the Community Parks Supervisor or other appropriate officerfor the undertaking of work in parks, playing fields, landscaped areas and openspaces either individually or as part of a team.
Summary of responsibilitiesand personal duties
1.Tomaintain the orderly condition of grounds, that is, sweeping, hoeing, raking,mowing, edging, removal of litter/rubbish, etc.
2.Tocarry out labour associated with soil cultivation, manuring, site preparationand construction.
3.Tocarry out grass cutting, hedge cutting and pruning.
4.Touse powered hand tools and light plant to perform duties.
5.Toload, unload and move equipment and materials such as mowers, barrows, plants,soil, fertilisers, horticultural tools and sundries.
6.Tomaintain all tools and equipment in a satisfactory condition including thecleaning of garden tools and basic cleaning and maintenance of lawnmowers.
7.Toundergo periodic training as and when required.
8.Tocarry out skilled horticultural/sports ground/arboricultural operations. To also identify, maintain and cultivate awide range of plants, trees and shrubs and be able to take remedial action tocontrol growth/pests/diseases, use of wide range of horticultural tools andsundries.
9.Toassist in the training of staff, including ability to pass on skills and givedirection to lesser graded staff and staff placements.
10.Tocarry out turf and seed sowing.

Qualificationsand experience
Applicantsmust, as at the closing date
·possessan NVQ Level 2 in Amenity Horticulture, or an equivalent relevant qualification;
·possessthe PA1 and PA6 Pesticide Application Certificates; and
·beable to demonstrate by providing personal and specific examples, at least oneyear’s relevant work experienceof each of the following:
a)undertakinggardening and horticultural work, for example, grass cutting, hedge trimming,turfing and seed sowing, planting, working in glasshouses, sweeping, removal oflitter and rubbish etc; and
b)dealingwith members of the public, in a face to face environment.
Short-listing criteriaInaddition to the above qualifications and experience, Belfast City Councilreserves the right to shortlist only those applicants who, as at the closingdate for receipt of application forms:
·inthe first instance, can demonstrate on the application form, by providing personaland specific examples, at least two years’ relevant work experience of each of the above areas (a) and (b); and
inthe second instance, possess a relevant higher-level qualification, such as anNVQ Level 3 in Amenity Horticulture, or equivalent relevant.

Salary: £12.80 per hour plus accrued holiday pay
