Company Description

Our client is the owner of a 450-acre facility near Inverness in Scotland and one of the largest

brownfield ports in the UK. Following the Initial Investment in April 2023, a major

redevelopment programme at has commenced. The construction programme

and future operational needs of the port are going to have a substantial impact on the local

economy and has the potential to create hundreds of jobs and reskilling opportunities for the

local community, the wider energy transition sector in Scotland and around the world.


They are looking to hire a General Counsel who must have experience of long term, multi year commercial contracts.


Role Description

This is a hybrid part-time role for a General Counsel at https://reigniteacademy.co.uk/ located in Inverness with flexibility for some remote work. The General Counsel will be responsible for providing legal counsel to the management team, acting as a key advisor on all legal matters including multi-year commercial contracts, risk and compliance, and regulation. The General Counsel will ensure the company operates within the law at all times, and that all legal risks are appropriately identified, assessed, mitigated, and managed.


Essential expereience


  • Strong commercial skill set (particularly negotiation of long term multi year contracts);
  • Strong awareness of risk management and an ability to advise the board/mgt on risk across a wide perspective;
  • Sector experience (probably real estate, port too narrow and we want to change the industry norm);
  • Ability to work effectively with peers and support peers to effectively undertake their work for the company (CFO, CCO, HRD etc);
  • Ability to be self-sufficient and only utilise external legal support as and when necessary.



Qualifications

  • A law degree from an accredited law school and a practicing lawyer.
  • Minimum of 10 years of legal experience as a General Counsel or a similar position with expertise in contracts, compliance, and regulation.
  • Extensive experience of long term, complex, commercial contracts
  • Experience in risk assessment and mitigation, corporate governance, and board governance.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships and credibility with key stakeholders.
  • Outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and to prioritize workload effectively.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and to understand the sensitivity of legal issues.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.
  • Relevant sector experience - energy, renewables, property management - would be an added advantage
