About this role

Capital One is excited to have a new opportunity for an in-house lawyer within the UK Legal Team to advise on supplier and other commercial contracts.

Our Contracts team within Legal plays a key role in managing risk when we are engaging suppliers who work for Capital One.  As a financial institution, ensuring robust supplier contracts is essential.  To complement our existing team, we are looking for a strong team player with great communication skills, contract drafting and negotiating experience and commercial acumen. If you're looking for a new, exciting step in your career this could be for you!

Reporting to Senior Counsel, Legal, you'll provide legal advice on contracts between Capital One and a variety of third parties, advising a wide range of business areas including on outsourcing and technology agreements.

What you’ll do

  • Prepare and negotiate contractual arrangements, including services agreements, outsourcing agreements, software licences, terms and conditions of purchase, variation agreements, termination agreements and renewals, following Capital One’s precedents

  • Advise on legal risks in relation to third party contracting, including review of supplier terms and escalation to senior legal counsel where appropriate

  • Manage requests for contractual changes from start to finish, ensuring relevant business processes are followed and involving appropriate stakeholders

  • Develop and maintain great working relationships with suppliers, sourcing managers and business managers in Capital One UK and where appropriate within our US parent company

  • Ensure contracts procedures and policies are followed and risks identified to business stakeholders

  • Support senior legal counsel on major commercial transactions

  • Advise on financial services regulation and data protection issues specific to third party contracts, escalating to the legal regulatory specialists where necessary

  • Supervise and mentor junior team members in relation to contract drafting and legal advice

  • Identify and assess the impact of new laws related to contracting and train other business areas where appropriate

  • Manage your workload in a timely and effective manner and proactively communicate to stakeholders on progress

  • Own your own development and support the development of others within the business through feedback, coaching and mentoring.

What we’re looking for

  • Demonstrated experience in drafting and negotiating commercial contracts

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment, with flexibility to adapt to our changing business needs

  • Great team working – across our supplier and sourcing managers as well as our broader Legal department and throughout our business’ multi-functional teams

  • Great communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to question and influence stakeholders when necessary

  • A strong commercial mindset

  • Confidence in networking and relationship building

  • Proven track record of delivery with a results focus

  • Excellent self-organisation skills – detailed planning skills and management of workload pipeline with a proactive approach to conflicting priorities

  • Genuine focus on delivering a best in class legal service to our business

Where and how you'll work

This is a permanent position based in our Nottingham offices.

We have a hybrid working model which gives you flexibility to work from our offices and from home.

We’re big on collaboration and connection, so you’ll be based in our Nottingham office 3 days a week on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Many of our associates have flexible working arrangements, and we're open to talking about an arrangement that works for you.

What’s in it for you

  • Bring us all this - and you’ll be well rewarded with a role contributing to the roadmap of an organisation committed to transformation

  • We offer high performers strong and diverse career progression, investing heavily in developing great people through our Capital One University training programmes (and appropriate external providers)

  • Open-plan workspaces and accessible facilities designed to inspire and support you. Our Nottingham head-office has a fully-serviced gym, subsidised restaurant, mindfulness and music rooms.
