Salary: £22,182.96 - £22,365.96 (pro rata)

Hours: 30 hours per week over a 3-week rota covering 1 weekend in every 3

Contract: Permanent

Location: Adel Beck Secure Children's Home

About the role  
As our next General Domestic you’ll maintain a clean, hygienic and safe working environment in the Home’s main kitchen assisting the chefs in the provision of a high-quality catering service. You’ll also provide an on-site laundry and clothing service that meets the Children's Homes Regulations, Youth Justice Standards, Leeds City Council and the Homes policies. The role is integral to our Business Support Team.

Job Profile

Job purpose 
As a General Domestic you will create and maintain a customer focused attitude and approach that promotes positive relationships and generates a culture of openness and trust. You will deliver efficient, effective and quality services by way of flexible working. You will work together with colleagues from all other service areas within the home to provide and maintain a safe and secure living and learning environment that promotes the safety and welfare of children and young people in which they can prosper, develop, and achieve. You will maintain and support pro-social behaviour, a restorative and solution focussed approach with, children, young people and colleagues.  

Role:

To maintain a clean, hygienic and safe working environment in the Home’s Main Kitchen and Laundry.

To assist the chefs in the provision of a high-quality catering service and provide an on-site laundry and clothing service that meet with Children's Homes Regulations, Youth Justice Standards, Leeds City Council and the homes policies, procedures and guidance 
Responsibilities:

  • To provide a high quality laundry and clothing service as required by the Home including the issuing, washing, drying and ironing of clothing and bed linen. 
  • To assist the Chef’s and Chef Manager with food production, presentation and service to accommodate service requirements which takes into account children and young people’s cultural and dietary requirements. 
  • Assist the chef with food hygiene monitoring and recording systems as stated in Leeds City Council, Cook Safe Food Hygiene Policy including temperature checks. 
  • The maintenance of Health & Safety and Hygiene Standards including a daily check of all operational catering and laundry equipment. 
  • The safe manual handling and appropriate use, of stores, cooking equipment, cleaning materials, laundry and clothing items (training will be provided). 
  • Before using any equipment or substances make sure a risk assessment is in place and safety data sheets for products are available. 
  • Assist the chefs in checking all deliveries and store all goods as stated in Food Safety policies.  
  • To operate the Home’s on site laundry equipment and service on a rota basis.
  • Deliver efficient, effective and quality services by way of flexible working.
  • Replenishment of stocks of clothing, laundry and household items. 
  • Work together with the Chef Manager, Chefs, Care and Education staff in the provision of catering opportunities and activities for children and young people. Training will be provided in managing challenging behaviour.
  • Participate in annual appraisal, training and development activities. 
  • Provide information for records. 
  • Use of current computer software programmes and packages will be required. Training will be provided. 
  • Contribute to Team Meetings. 
  • Work together with colleagues to provide a high standard of service. 
  • To undertake any other duties that are commensurate with the job evaluation outcome for this post.
  • To comply with the requirements of all Leeds City Council policies, procedures and staff instructions, including responsibilities under the Health and Safety Policy and Procedures.

Qualifications 

  • Current Basic Food Hygiene Certificate is desirable, qualification must be achieved within 3 months of appointment.

Essential requirements It is essential that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post. Candidates will only be shortlisted for interview if they can demonstrate that they meet all the essential requirements. 

  • Ability to serve meals to maintain the Home’s high level of service delivery. 
  • Good communication skills, including face-to-face and telephone skills. 
  • Able to listen actively, ask questions, clarify points and check understanding. 
  • Able to deal positively with difficult and challenging people.
  • Able to demonstrate an ability to work as part of a team. 
  • Able to work on own initiative and adhere to timescales. 
  • Able to issue clothing and provide a laundry service. 
  • An understanding of service delivery issues. 
  • Experience of dealing with enquiries both face to face and over the telephone. 
  • Experience of working in a time-controlled environment. 
  • Experience of working in a team and on own initiative.

Desirable requirements It is desirable that the candidate should be able to demonstrate the following criteria for the post.  Candidates are not required to meet all the desirable requirements however these may be used to distinguish between candidates. 

  • Food Hygiene Certificate to be achieved within 3 months of appointment. 
  • Knowledge of Children’s Homes National Minimum Standards.  
  • Knowledge of the Children act 1989, Volume 5, Children’s Homes. 
  • Knowledge of the Secure Estate for children and young people. 
  • Of working in a residential care home setting. 
  • In the use of commercial catering & laundry equipment.
