We are currently looking for an experienced Geotechnical Manager to join our friendly team. Please note this role can be flexible on location and offers hybrid working including visits to various sites.

Main ResponsibilitiesThe Geotechnical Manager is a key member of the Technical Services team. This exciting opportunity will require you to work autonomously and take responsibility for managing challenging Geological and Geotechnical development within operational quarries. Therefore, to succeed you’ll need a comprehensive knowledge and expertise in all aspects of quarrying, mineral extraction and open pit working.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities of the Geotechnical Manager, not exhaustive:


Providing specialist operational geotechnical and geological advice to ensure our quarries are developed in a manner that is operationally safe and cost effective
Effectively collaborating with Operational colleagues and fellow team members to coach, train and further develop geotechnical and geological competence
Carrying out and providing follow-up to Regulation 32 Appraisals on operational sites
Undertaking / Overseeing Regulation 33 Geotechnical Assessments of quarry excavations and tips as well as periodic Reviews as per Regulation 34
Conducting inspections of quarry excavations and tips as per the Quarry Inspection Scheme
Conducting inspections on closed units and non-quarry sites and undertaking or commissioning discontinuity surveys and collection of other types of technical field data
Designing excavations, tips and phased quarry development plans
Providing training and inductions into geotechnical management to Quarry Managers and other key operational staff
Supporting Tarmac’s Quarry Managers in the maintenance and application of a Geotechnical Management System
Acting as the lead participant in Annual Geotechnical Audits of Site Geotechnical Management Systems and procedures

The Ideal CandidateTo be successful in the role of Geotechnical Manager you as the candidate for the position must satisfy or be working towards the requirements of a Geotechnical Specialist as defined by the Quarries Regulations 1999.

ESSENTIAL Experience


Degree qualified – Geology, Earth Science, Geoscience, or related discipline
Professional status either as a Charted Geologist or Chartered Engineer
Possess a minimum 5 years’ role relevant experience in quarry design, soil mechanics, rock mechanics or excavation engineering
Strong working competency in overseeing or performing geotechnical analyses to determine the hazard and risk arising from the excavation or tip being assessed


DESIRABLE Skills


Working knowledge of quarry production processes – although not essential
