We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Global Head of Energy Transition.

Role purpose

The Global Head, Energy Transition will play a key role in helping the Bank and its customers globally and across industries transform to a Net Zero future. The role will have a particular focus on client/customer-facing engagement, market-shaping opportunities around the Energy Transition, and helping to transition HSBC’s portfolio of financed emissions to Net Zero by 2050, at the latest. The role holder will shape HSBC’s support for the Energy Transition globally, leveraging HSBC’s capital and networks to shape and advance the transition to a net zero future.

The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Act as a “go-to” senior expert for HSBC on the Energy Transition, helping to shape and deliver the bank’s net zero strategy and Energy Transition agenda.
  • Collaborate with bankers and regional leadership to drive client outreach with energy clients and engage them on their transition plans, seeking out opportunities for the bank to finance their transition.
  • Shape and execute the work of the Group Head of Climate Transition, Chief Sustainability Officer and Group Corporate Sustainability, managing an international team of experts, driving delivery in the regions.
  • Support the bank’s external engagement on Energy Transition with regulators, central banks and governments, think tanks, NGOs and academia.
  • Help build new capabilities to incorporate Energy Transition risk and opportunities into credit risk for oil and gas, power and utilities and coal-linked clients working with the Risk Function.
  • Use expertise to upskill HSBC’s front-line bankers on low-carbon technology and decarbonisation pathways for the energy sector, working closely with Group HR - Learning and Development, and Sustainability Leads in Global Businesses and Functions.
  • Provide expert input to the bank’s climate analytics and climate modelling work, including the financed emissions and target setting within the Climate Aligned Finance programme.

Accountabilities for Business, Customers and Stakeholders

  • Collaborate with bankers and regional leadership to drive client outreach and engagement on the Energy Transition, including a focus on client transition plans in the energy sector.
  • Take a proactive approach to identify opportunities for the bank to lead the Energy Transition.
  • Participate in the shaping the development and evolution of HSBC’s science-based, financed emissions targets for both oil & gas and power & utilities, and in their integration into the bank’s decision-making processes.
  • Drive and lead external engagement with clients, financial institutions, regulators, central banks, and governments, think tanks and academia on the Energy Transition, including a particular focus on the Energy Transition in Asia and the Middle East.
  • Act as a “go-to” senior expert for HSBC on the Energy Transition, including deep engagement with some of the world’s biggest emitters as well as working closely with regional leadership and client relationship managers within the bank.
  • Help build new capabilities to incorporate transition risk into credit risk for oil and gas, power and utilities and coal-linked clients working with the Risk Function.
  • Drive upskilling of HSBC’s front-line bankers on the Energy Transition and net zero, working closely with Group HR - Learning and Development, and Sustainability Leads in Global Businesses and Functions.
  • Participate in the development of innovative transition finance and wider net zero related financing opportunities for the Energy Transition in collaboration with the Group Head of Sustainable Infrastructure and Innovation.
  • Input to thought leadership for HSBC clients and within the wider firm on net zero with a particular focus on the Energy Transition, fostering cross-business collaboration, and partnership with leading external groups such as the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net-Zero (GFANZ), International Energy Agency (IEA), and the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC).

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Experience in leadership roles, ideally in consulting for financial institutions and the energy sector, financial services, or other relevant fields, with a track record of outstanding achievements.
  • Experience working in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment and managing multiple stakeholders across large organizations.
  • Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with senior business managers and colleagues at the Group level and those in other Regions and Businesses.
  • Lead and develop an international team to support the Energy Transition agenda

Functional Knowledge

  • Strong technical understanding of oil, gas, and power markets, as well as experience working with and developing energy and emissions models.
  • Deep expertise on climate change and the energy transition including low-carbon technologies, decarbonisation pathways, regulatory and policy levers, carbon budgets, science-based targets, climate analytics, and both transition and physical climate risk.
  • Familiarity with a range of standards and frameworks, including the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), the Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net-Zero (GFANZ), Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Financial Services Taskforce (FSTF) and the United Nations Environment Program Net-zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) as well as major energy decarbonisation scenarios including the International Energy Agency Net-Zero Emissions Scenario (NZE), and BloombergNEF’s New Energy Outlook (NEO).
  • Demonstrated visible, tangible and sustained contribution to the energy transition and net zero emissions agenda on behalf of an organization and across the entire client value chain.
  • Experience of working in a large, complex, international, and highly matrixed business environment operating across cultures.
  • A large external network covering the corporate, regulatory, government, NGO and academic landscape, as well as a top industry reputation and public profile and track record of thought leadership and industry engagement.

  • Tolerance for ambiguity with an ability to understand the core issue and connect the dots to think across and envision what is possible.

The chosen candidate for this role will be required to undergo enhanced vetting.
