The Governance Officer role is a new and exciting opportunity to join our governance team, working with local governing boards and the trust team to ensure that we are achieving our strategic and statutory responsibilities. This will be a home based role, working across trust schools that at different times will support Local Governing Bodies (LGB’s) across the trust.

Successful candidates will have excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills, be able to work independently and organise their own time whilst working to strict deadlines. Due to the nature of this role, discretion and confidentiality are vital.

The role will include working with Headteachers and Local Governing Bodies (LGB’s) to finalise agendas, organise paperwork and documentation, prepare minutes from local governing body meetings and where appropriate and working with other team members, providing advice to governors on procedural and legislative matters in accordance with our Trust’s governance approach and relevant statutory guidance and policy. You will also support the recruitment of new governors. You will be supported by our Governance Coordinator and work as a core part of our clerking team. Training will be available.

A flexible approach to working hours is essential as the role involves some twilight / evening meetings which tend to cluster in certain weeks of term. The Governance Officer is home based. A laptop will be provided. Access to the internet and ability to attend virtual meetings are a requirement. The Governance Officer are required to attend 6 meetings of each Local Governing Body it directly supports which in this case includes:

  • Bohunt Farnborough
  • Bohunt Horsham
  • The Priory School, Southsea

These meetings are held in person (these are held each half term dates agreed a year in advance.)

Your support of effective governance in the Trust will contribute towards the best outcomes for the students in the Schools you support.

The role is for 250 hours (roughly 8-10 hours a week) per academic year, which will include a total of 18 meetings of the local governing bodies (6 per school). The hours may be worked flexibly, across each half term, but must be prepared to accommodate the needs of the meeting cycle: some weeks may require fewer hours, but some weeks may require more hours. You must generally be available during term time: although by prior agreement with your line manager, this is also flexible.

There are opportunities for additional hours in order to meet the governance needs of the Trust including supporting local governing body panels as requested or to provide cover for other clerking team members in their absence.  This role is likely to develop further over time and there may be future opportunity to increase the number of days worked.
