Governance Secretary

Location : Edinburgh, UK

Salary : £34,800

Governance Secretary (£34,800pa)

It is an exciting time to join the Law Society of Scotland. Due to organisational growth, we have a full time opportunity (35 hours) within the Governance Team for an experienced Governance Secretary. You will provide exceptional governance and administrative support to the Council and our Board and be part of an evolving Governance team with the chance to shape the role. This role is vital to the success of the Law Society of Scotland and plays a wider part in ensuring strong governance across the Society and all of our committees.

Key Responsibilities for this role:

Co-ordinate all aspects of Council and Board governance and administration matters including the preparation of notices / agendas managing all aspects of meetings all in accordance with our Constitution and Standing Orders
Provide governance and administrative support the Council and general meetings of the Society
Coordinate meeting dates and produce monthly reports for Council and the Board
Attendance at meetings and drafting minutes, resolutions and matters arising for routine and transactional matters
Ensure governance and administration complies with our statutory, regulatory and constitutional obligations as well as our values
Support Council members with governance and administrative questions
Arrange and oversee Council member’s induction, on-boarding and leaving processes
Responsible for Council election and recruitment processes
Design and implement modern, efficient Council meeting and governance processes in line with our strategic aims and operating plans
Build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues and Council Members
Ensure key governance documents are implemented, updated and maintained
Ensure our systems and website accurately reflect Council makeup and membership and content relating to Council activities
Ensure effective and efficient communication between the Council, subcommittees of the Council, Board, Office Bearers, Senior Leadership Team and colleagues
Risk management and other general governance support for Governance manager, risk coordinator for Finance and Operations directorate

Key Knowledge, Skills and  Experience:

Ability to quickly synthesise information to gain a detailed knowledge of the Society’s Rules and Guidance
Excellent interpersonal skills, high degree of emotional intelligence and ability to influence
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
Excellent analytical and reporting skills
Ability to design and implement processes and procedures
Ability to understand disparate information and make sound and fair judgements and decisions
Highly organised and able to manage and prioritise workload to deliver targets
Attention to detail, but understanding big picture impact
Ability to meet deadlines and manage others to meet deadlines
