Job Title:GP TraineeHealth and Wellbeing Manager - GP Training

Reporting to: National Director of GP Training

Base: Remote, travel to scheme locations nationwide will be required

Contract type: Fixed term 3-year contract.

Hours per week: Part time, 3 days per week

About the ICGP

The Irish College of General Practitioners (ICGP) is the postgraduate medical training body (PGTB) responsible for postgraduate education, training and research in the medical specialty of General Practice. The College has a national advisory role in relation to medical standards and engages with the Medical Council, Department of Health and Children, the Health Service Executive and the Health Information & Quality Authority among others. As a membership organisation, the ICGP is responsible for providing and supporting the continuous professional development for general practitioners, numbering over 4,000. The ICGP is the PGTB accredited by the Medical Council to provide professional training for doctors wishing to enter the specialty of General Practice.


About GP Training

The College is undergoing a period of significant growth in line with Irish health workforce demands. Consequently, the total number of doctors in GP training is growing significantly.


Job Purpose

The GP Trainee Health and Wellbeing Manager for GP Training will play a pivotal role in ensuring the holistic Health and Wellbeing of approximately 1,100 GP trainees (growing to 1,400 by 2027) in the GP training programme. This role focuses on managing and coordinating various health promotion activities, facilitating access to resources and services, and supporting trainees in managing their overall Health and Wellbeing journey.

This new role will suit someone who is passionate about supporting the academic and personal success of future General Practitioners and thrives in a collaborative, dynamic environment. The job holder will play a key role in fostering a supportive workplace culture where the trainees can succeed personally and professionally.


Key result areas:

  1. Support ICGP in maintaining the integrity of the GP training programmes by facilitating and supporting trainees during formal training.
  2. Provide guidance to trainee GP's and signpost them to the relevant support services appropriate for their individual needs and career aspirations.
  3. Coordinate with Scheme Directors and Scheme Directing teams nationwide to ensure trainees receive appropriate academic support and resources.
  4. Organise well-being activities and events aimed at fostering camaraderie and resilience among trainees.
  5. Support and advise trainees on reasonable accommodation requirements, engaging with the HSE wellbeing support hub as necessary.
  6. Visit GP training schemes to gather data on key indicators and early warning signs, ensuring appropriate follow-up and support systems.
  7. Promote trainees' wellbeing by addressing stressors and promoting work-life balance.
  8. Collaborate with mental health professionals, HR, management, and stakeholders to integrate well-being initiatives into the College's policies, practices, and culture. Build partnerships with local Health and well-being resources.
  9. Manage the approved standard operating procedures when referring trainee issues to their employer, the HSE.
  10. Ensure appropriate policies are in place, ongoing review of same and work these through the current governance of the College. 
  11. Prepare regular structured reports to inform internal and external stakeholders.
  12. Play a role in EDI (Referred to as WIDE, Wellbeing, Inclusive, Diversity & Equality) and the College's accreditation in this area. Champion and effect support as much as possible for trainees.
  13. Actively partake in any relevant ICGP's Committees as appropriate.


Person specification

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills, expertise, and competencies:


Qualifications & experience

  • A relevant third level qualification, or equivalent in subjects such as psychology, public health promotion, human resources, or a related field.
  • Certification in coaching, employee assistance programs, or related areas would be desirable.
  • Have a proven track record of at least five years' experience developing and implementing wellbeing programs in a corporate setting.
  • Proven understanding of mental health principles, stress management techniques, and Wellbeing best practices in diverse workplaces.
  • Knowledge of and relevant experience in a postgraduate education/training environment an advantage.
  • Proven knowledge of wellbeing principles and strategies for promoting work life balance


Technical competencies

  • Must have a proven high level of ICT skills, including MS Office suite, with capacity to maximise technology to increase efficiency.
  • Knowledge of data analysis techniques and proficiency in using technology for program evaluation and reporting.


Behavioral competencies

  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including listening skills and empathy. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, proven ability to build rapport with diverse individuals and inspire trust and confidence. 
  • Demonstrated ability to provide mentorship and support to individuals facing academic or personal challenges.
  • Knowledge of wellbeing principles and strategies for promoting work life balance
  • Ability to maintain professional ethics, confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion.
  • Display a curious and open mindset.
  • Attention to detail with proven organisational and administrative skills.
  • Positive approach to dealing with challenges and conflict.
  • Excellent management skills with the ability to communicate effectively with a wide, diverse stakeholder group.
