Job Title: Graduate Civil Engineer
Location: Curzon Street Station (Birmingham)
Department: Design/Construction
Post Reports To: Design Manager/Project Manager
Purpose of the job
As part of the learning and development process, the Graduate Civil Engineer will take graduate roles in the design and delivery teams.
In the design team the graduate will provide support to the Design Manager in the control of the design deliverables, design programme tracking, meetings, presentations, etc
In the construction team the graduate will provide support to the Project Managers and Construction Managers in the management of subcontracts, planning site activities, meetings, programme tracking, inspections and tests plans, readiness processes, etc
The Graduate Civil Engineer helps to create an efficient working environment, ensures technical processes and scheduled and completed and assists in running an auditable series of processes.
Accountabilities / Key responsibilities
Construction Department:
- Ensures that start of shift safety briefings records are kept and adequate records maintained by the sub-contractors.
- Ensure that all relevant construction specific permits are obtained by the subcontractors and that registers of such permitting are maintained.
- Review works on site for progress in accordance with work plans
- Report all construction issues to the Construction Manager or Site Supervisor.
- Carry out spot checks on construction works on site to ensure that materials and methods are compliant with agreed standards and processes.
- Coordinate materials approval process.
- Record progress of sub-contractors works on site through use of diaries, photographs, marked up drawings.
- Assist with developing and measuring KPIs for planning and installation.
- Ensure all certificates, assurance and compliance certificates are generated and collated.
- Ensure that CDM regulations are complied.
- Review Method Statements
- Ensure that suitable Inspection and Test Plans ITPs) are produced by the Subcontractors and that the appropriate Companies are satisfied that the ITPs are satisfactory.
- Carry out / witness inspections as required in ITPs
- Carry out compliance checks as indicated by the ITP’s.
- Ensure that any Health and Safety File information is compiled.
- Evaluate and prepare Early Warning Notices to project controls and describe mitigations measures.
- Ensure that the subcontractors produce and record As-Built information progressively and that progressive acceptance / comments are provided from providers Companies where possible.
Designing Department:
- Design deliverables management (documents tracking and control)
- Support Meetings Management (minutes, actions, etc)
- Supporting control documents production (progress tracking, design records, etc)
Experience, knowledge, qualifications & training
- Recent BEng Civil Engineering graduate.
- Have a good working knowledge of English, both written and verbal, and be able to report at management level.
- Knowledge of the fundamentals in administering and working under standard Construction Contracts.
- Experience in use of surveying equipment, calibration requirements and basic use.
- Understanding of the management of Temporary Works, use of Design Briefs and the role of the Temporary Works Designer and Temporary Works Coordinator.
- Working towards Membership of a relevant professional body at Member or Associate Member level.
- Computer skills – Word, Excel, Outlook, Explorer.
