Graduate / Junior MechanicalDesign Engineer – Tooling

Based at our office in Wickford, Essex

Are you looking for a new Design Engineering role where you can hone your design skills in a global manufacturing business, developing tooling for a wide range of manufacturing processes?

As a Graduate / Junior Mechanical Tooling Design Engineer here at Leidos, you will be part of a team who design and develop tools, fixtures, and equipment used in the manufacturing process, ensuring that they meet quality, efficiency, and safety standards.

Leidos is a truly global business, supplying several industries from Automotive manufacturing, airport security and detection equipment to energy. From our site in Wickford (Essex), we design and manufacture a number of parts, jigs and fixtures which are used in car manufacturing and automation projects.

As part of your role, you will be responsible for;

  • Tooling Design: Collaborate with senior engineers to create detailed Tooling Designs, including fixtures, jigs, clamps, and other specialized equipment required for manufacturing processes.
  • CAD Modelling: Utilise computer-aided design (CAD) software to create 2D and 3D models of tooling and mechanical components, ensuring that designs are accurate and conform to specifications.
  • Analysis and Testing: Perform structural and functional analysis to assess the integrity and performance of the Tooling Designs, conducting tests and simulations to identify potential issues and make necessary adjustments.
  • Material Selection: Assist in selecting appropriate materials for tooling components, considering factors such as strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Continuous Improvement: Contribute to the continuous improvement of mechanical designs, seeking opportunities to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve product quality.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure that Tooling Designs meet safety standards and regulatory requirements. Collaborate with relevant authorities to obtain necessary certifications.

About You

Ideally HND or Degree qualified in a Mechanical Engineering subject.

Proficient in the use of CAD software - SolidWorks, Catia or Inventor.

Basic knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and machining techniques.

Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Understanding of safety and quality standards in manufacturing.

Ideally some experience with finite element analysis (FEA) and simulation tools.

Ideally hold a driving license, there may be the odd occasion where you need to visit customers or suppliers.

Due to the nature of our business, you must be able to obtain and maintain BPSS clearance.
