NPL is tasked with developing and maintaining the UK’s national primary measurement standards: time, distance, mass, temperature and many more. Our focus is real world impact – we apply advanced science and engineering to boost the UK’s prosperity and quality of life.

Our work is crucial to accelerating research, development and testing for new products and processes – from antibiotics and cancer treatments to un-hackable quantum communications and superfast 5G. It’s an exciting time to join as we are opening new facilities, diversifying our projects and reaching out to new audiences with our marketing and communications.

This role is based in the Design Team within our Marketing and Communications Department. The team plays a key role in communicating our mission, promoting our work and marketing our services.

You’ll get to work on a variety of assets and design projects, from conception to completion. Generating fresh and innovative ideas that effectively portray NPL and its values.

You’ll use your creativity and attention to detail to design assets that uphold NPL's visual identity, ensuring our brand is applied consistently. You will be confident in providing guidance to others where needed.

Using your excellent communication skills, you’ll work with the Marketing and Communications team and stakeholders to understand project requirements and ensure any assets created meet the brief and specifications provided. You’ll ensure projects are delivered within the timescales and are aligned with the business goals. Working closely with printers and external suppliers on projects to ensure a smooth process and delivery.

You’ll have an up to date understanding of accessibility requirements for design, and continually develop your knowledge in design software and techniques to create forward thinking designs and assets.


  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or equivalent

  • Previous experience of working as a Graphic Designer, either in-house or agency

  • Experience with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator & Photoshop) is an essential

  • Confident using Microsoft PowerPoint and Word

  • Animation and video editing skills using Adobe Premier Pro and After Effects

  • Familiarity with design techniques and presenting creative concepts

  • Understanding of brand guidelines and how to implement them

  • Good teamwork and communication skills

  • Meticulous attention to visual details

  • Time management and multitasking abilities

  • Creative skills and problem-solving aptitude

  • Adaptability and flexibility as project priorities change
