We are currently seeking a high caliber professional to join our team as Group Headof AI Research & Development.

Role purpose

HSBC is seeking a visionary and dynamic leader to join our team as the Group Headof AI Research & Development. This senior executive role will be responsible for driving deep-AI research and development across the organization in alignment with group AI strategy.

The role holder will lead AI forward looking vision for the bank with dedicated technology resources to test / experiment / incubate and build intellectual capability for futureproofing via patents / technology papers. The role holder will ensure that HSBC stays aHead of AI tech trend by leading the way on innovative use cases, and building partnerships with fintechs and thought leaders in AI.

The role holder will act as advisor and partner to GBGF and Engineering leadership, and will lead Engineering teams to provide central build of reusable assets. The role will develop technology know-how and capabilities for bank-wide AI programme and aims to drive a 10x improvement by coordinating and supporting best practices across the bank.

The role holder will develop AI & Generative-AI assets via research and product development, working within AI Target Operating Model. In addition, the role holder will own and manage tech development of new ideas, testing of emerging elements in AI, business management, and common capability development across the AI strategy.

Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning: identify potential areas where AI can be leveraged to drive operational efficiency, improve customer experience, and enhance risk management
  • Research and Development: identify cutting-edge AI technologies, algorithms, and methodologies that can be applied in the banking sector and evaluate their potential value and feasibility for the bank.
  • Team Management: build and manage team of AI researchers and developers and fostering a culture of innovation and collaboration.
  • Collaboration and Partnerships: collaborate with internal stakeholders across different business units to understand their needs and develop tailored AI solutions.
  • Technology Implementation: work closely with IT to ensure seamless integration of AI technologies into existing systems, infrastructure, and workflows.
  • Performance Evaluation: analyze data and metrics to assess the effectiveness and impact of AI solutions, making necessary adjustments and improvements.
  • Industry Thought Leadership: represent the bank in industry forums, conferences, and events, sharing insights and best practices related to AI in banking

Leadership & Teamwork

  • Lead and manage the AI/GAI Centre of Excellence and AI/GAI research teams. 
  • Represent the AI program at the Group AI/GAI Committee, ensuring adherence to standards, principles, and ethical/responsible use. 
  • Drive upskilling of bank-wide AI adoption by internal and external partnerships, aligning with Energize for Growth pillar of bank strategy.

Functional Knowledge

  • Business Acumen: The ability to understand both digital products and regulated industry so can bridge and move between where we are and where bank aspires to be.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies, including various algorithms, neural networks, deep learning, natural language processing (NLP) etc.
  • Familiarity with Big Data Technologies and distributed computing frameworks to leverage these technologies for processing and analyzing large datasets.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to deploy and manage AI models on the cloud for scalability and cost-efficiency.
  • Awareness of Cybersecurity and Data Privacy threats, and the ability to implement robust security measures to protect sensitive financial data and AI systems.
  • Understanding the legal and regulatory requirements applicable to the financial services industry, such as GDPR, Data Sharing, CCPA, or specific financial regulations

  • Trusted and respected across AI community with a proven record of success in senior leadership roles.
  • Experience in Retail & Wholesale Banking, with a deep understanding of the financial services industry.
  • A strong understanding of AI and ML technologies, algorithms, and methodologies is essential. This includes knowledge of deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, reinforcement learning, and other AI subfields.
  • Proficiency in data science concepts, statistical modelling, and data analysis techniques is crucial for leveraging AI to extract insights, make predictions, and drive data-driven decision-making.
  • Familiarity with banking operations, financial products, regulatory frameworks, and industry-specific challenges is important. This knowledge helps in identifying areas where AI can add value and in designing AI solutions that align with banking requirements and compliance standards.
  • Comfortable interacting with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, including Customers, Product teams, Regulators, Industry/Trade Groups, and bank’s senior leadership (i.e., GEC, Board, etc.).
  • Highly competent, collaborative, and outcome-oriented, with a strong ability to drive results and navigate complex challenges. 
  • Awareness of ethical considerations related to AI, such as fairness, bias, transparency, and privacy, is important. Knowledge of relevant regulations, such as data protection laws and industry-specific compliance requirements, helps in ensuring responsible and compliant AI implementations.
  • Tenacious and committed to delivering necessary outcomes in alignment with HSBC's mission and purpose.
  • A strong focus on customer and teammate needs, with a dedication to serving and supporting them in achieving their goals.

The chosen candidate for this role will be required to undergo enhanced vetting.
