Job description

About the Role

We are seeking a Group Tax Director to join our team and lead OUP’s tax affairs in alignment with our charitable business objectives.

We are the world’s largest university press. We have both a worldwide reach and a personal understanding of local needs, partnering on the ground to adapt publications and resources to meet the individual needs of communities, societies, and countries. We partner with researchers, educators, and technology partners to stay ahead of the changing ways people around the world are accessing and sharing knowledge. With a presence in more than 50 countries and millions of customers around the world, an idea launched at OUP can have global impact.

Key accountabilities:

  • Ensure agreed tax policy remains current according to business needs and make recommendations for changes to Audit Committee
  • Prepare biannual reports for Group Audit Committee
  • Lead preservation of tax exemptions by monitoring internal and external developments and policing compliance with local regulations
  • Provide practical, technical advice to the business on how to structure new business initiatives, including sales arrangements and appropriate corporate structures
  • Identify tax risks worldwide along with proposals for their evaluation and mitigation, and oversee management of major tax issues in conjunction with local management
  • Ensure all group businesses comply with local tax requirements
  • Prepare UK corporation and any necessary non-resident tax returns, dealing with resulting queries from HMRC
  • Drive a culture of excellence, enabling and supporting development within the team
  • Act as principal liaison with Oxford University’s tax department and UK/Group tax advisers and auditors

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You

A confident communicator, and ideally with line management experience, you’ll have a good understanding of global business models. You’ll also have:

  • A UK tax qualification and be a qualified accountant
  • In-depth experience of UK and substantial experience of international taxation
  • In-depth knowledge of the taxation of UK charities
  • The ability to communicate strong financial concepts to non-financial people
  • Experience of dealing with challenging situations whilst maintaining strong working relationships
  • Strong business understanding and commercial awareness

Knowledge of the publishing industry would be advantageous.

Benefits

We care about work/life balance here at OUP. With this in mind we offer 25 days’ holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect to working patterns, dependent on role. We also have a great variety of active employee networks and societies.

We help make your money go further by contributing to your pension up to 12%, offering loans and savings schemes through our partnership with Salary Finance, in addition to travel to work schemes and access to a wide range of local discounts.

This role comes with the added benefit of private medical insurance, a car/allowance, and a management bonus.
