Thales UK Research, Technology and Innovation (RTI) identifies, explores and develops technologies and innovations for use in future products and services. RTI works with all of our businesses and their customers to deliver a strategic advantage for Thales. Collaborating with academic and other research partners helps us in our mission to de-risk future technologies and ensure Thales is competitive.

Thales UK have an exciting opportunity available for a Head of AI/Machine Learning Technology Research to join the RTI team. I n this role, you will lead the AI/Machine Learning research agenda for Thales UK, coordinating AI/ML research across the UK and the wider Thales Group, and actively accelerating the core, strategic research programmes. You will lead a core team accelerating AI/ML core research in-particular deep learning in Thales UK, identifying and securing external funding to complement this research agenda.

Day to day you will:

  • Coordinate core research with other research groups including AI Validation and Verification (V&V), Human-Machine Teaming (HMT) and applied AI.

  • Coordinate with product lines across Thales to identify AI/ML use-cases.

  • Help grow AI/ML research team capability and personnel.

  • Under the governance of the Thales corporate technical strategy, investigate and develop new technologies and concepts up to Technology Readiness Level 5 of relevance across multiple market domains and a wide range of application areas.

  • Carry out fundamental feasibility studies, state-of-the-art surveys and modelling/simulation.

  • Develop proof of concept demonstrators using appropriate software and hardware implementations

  • Work within a research team to invent and explore new concepts and technologies and demonstrate their applicability to the Thales businesses and their customers.

About You

You will be highly experienced in an appropriate Machine Learning/AI research or advanced development environment role, with a record of delivering research in this space. You should be able to lead a number of large research projects in a technical leadership capacity. You will have the ability to understand complex new data and adapt existing technology to work with new datasets. You should have excellent communication skills, with the ability to interface at all levels of the business and its customers.
