Job description

We are looking for proactive, organised and enthusiastic individual to lead the Business Management Team of the Aviation Directorate in the Department for Transport. This role is varied and cross cutting and will suit motivated self-starters who are natural collaborators and problem-solvers, and capable of working with a high degree of autonomy, to drive progress on a range of Business Management and corporate activities.

The successful applicant will work closely with the Aviation Director and the Aviation Directorate Senior Management Team, to set the direction and lead the coordination and delivery of Directorate-wide priorities, corporate responsibilities and functions. This includes acting with a high degree of autonomy to lead a team to deliver on cross-cutting issues in the Directorate, including finance, IT support and business continuity as well as taking the initiative to support wider plans to improve the Directorate based on staff feedback.

DfT is a great place to work, and our ‘one team’ approach really makes a difference. We value our staff and that’s why we’re committed to nurturing an inclusive environment across the department. You’ll be part of an innovative organisation that invests in all our people, ensuring we have the diverse skills to deliver transport that moves Britain ahead now and into the future.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Working with the Aviation Director and Senior Management (SMT) team to proactively support the functions of the SMT and make the Aviation Directorate a great place to work by collaborating closely with SMT to take action on staff feedback, including in response to People Surveys, organising corporate activities, such as away days, and providing clear communication to staff on directorate-wide issues.
  • The post-holder will also ensure the effective functioning of SMT meetings and away days, working with the Director to ensure priority issues are discussed, and ensuring actions are effectively taken forward.
  • Taking initiative to proactively support the Aviation Director in undertaking their duties, including by using excellent communication and influencing skills to act on behalf of the Director when needed, providing clear direction and guidance to the Directorate.
  • The post holder will also deliver through their team to ensure effective diary management, timely commissioning of briefing to support relevant meetings, providing readouts and actions to relevant teams as necessary and ensuring arrangements are made for domestic and international travel as needed.
  • Leading the Aviation Directorate Business Management Team (BMT) to manage core business functions and ensure the smooth running of the Directorate, including coordinating and implementing finance tasks for the Directorate, managing the requirements for new starters and leavers.
  • Ensuring an effective Business Continuity plan for the Directorate is in place.
  • Aligning Aviation Directorate activity with cross-cutting functions of the Aviation Maritime and Security (AMS) Director-General Group and wider DfT. The post-holder will work closely with Business Management Teams across the AMS group, and the Director Generals Private Office to coordinate and collaborate on group corporate functions.
  • This includes on risks and milestone governance and management, ensuring their integration into wider AMS and Departmental reporting. The post holder will also coordinate and manage a range of corporate commissions that cut across the Directorate, working closely with the SMT to do so.
