Job description

Bedford Modern School (BMS) is an outstanding HMC independent co-educational day school for students aged 7-18. Our community is a friendly, happy and supportive one and all of the 350 staff members, spanning both teaching and non-teaching roles, help to make BMS a very special place to work.

We are looking to appoint an outstanding classroom practitioner with well-developed leadership skills to lead our successful Business department. Business is one of five subjects in the PPE Faculty at BMS, along with Economics, Politics, Philosophy and Psychology.

You will be responsible for the strategic direction of the subject within the school and continue to raise and promote the profile of this increasingly popular subject, leading on Business related issues involving staff, students, parents, and exam boards.

The successful applicant must have a degree in Business or a closely related discipline, experience of teaching A-Level Business and the ability to inspire and motivate experienced colleagues through dynamic leadership. They will have an appreciation of the value that comes from being actively involved in departmental trips, events, and enrichment activities and be willing to contribute to the extensive co-curricular life of both the faculty and the wider school.

In return, we can offer an excellent working environment, 35 term-time weeks, a salary range which is competitive and above the national teachers’ pay scales, a generous pension scheme, the option to be part of a medical insurance scheme and generous fee remission (subject to availability and entrance requirements).

We encourage applications from all communities as we want to have a workforce that reflects the social, cultural and ethnic diversity of our students.

Closing date: Monday 4 March 2024

Interview: Monday 11 March 2024 Further details and how to apply can be found on our website:

Any internal candidates must apply through Employee Self Service. Please see the guide in the company news area.

The School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Applicants will be required to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). The School may carry out online searches on shortlisted applicants.

The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. The School is therefore permitted to ask job applicants to declare all convictions and cautions on a self-declaration form in advance of attending an interview.
