Head Of Department

NPL continues to deliver world-class science and engineering and as a Head of Department, you will be a part of this by setting the direction for your Department and leading your talented team to deliver at their best. 

You are the one who will take a step back and assess how we’re performing in line with our obligations to customers and our aspirations, so that we’re continually challenging what we do and how we do it. Driving the performance of your team and ensuring the right people are in the right roles to deliver will be essential. You will also need to build relationships with stakeholders and customers, to understand their requirements and assess the impact these have on your department’s direction and resources.

We are now working in a hybrid way, with a mix of remote and office working, however this role requires site presence for a significant proportion of time because your visibility and connection with the delivery environment is important as you lead laboratory-based teams who deliver research programmes and services.

About You

You will have solid commercial and financial acumen coupled with a keen interest and passion for STEM in order to guide and shape the direction within NPL.

Essential skills:

• A wealth of experience of inspirational leadership to ensure NPL’s mission, strategy and plan are articulated and delivered successfully, to deliver maximum impact and growth
• A record of driving the performance and potential within your team, building highly motivated, customer focussed teams
• Management of P&L and delivering to time, cost and quality
• Accountability for health, safety, quality, security and environmental compliance.
• Leading science and engineering capabilities within the department and across NPL in collaboration to create seamless delivery
• Building strategic relationships with both internal and external customers.
