Design Manager / Head of Design

Location: outskirts of Woking, Surrey

Salary: IRO £100,000 plus excellent benefits

Our client is an Optical / Digital Instrumentation Manufacturer, and their impressive newly built facility is located on the outskirts of Woking, Surrey. Due to internal promotion, they are looking for an experienced Design Manager / Head of Design to head up the design department and manage eleven staff. As Design Manager / Head of Design you would work closely with Production Engineering, Quality & Machine Shop. This is atechnical leadership and departmental management role; therefore the successful candidate must be an approachable, supportive, and motivational leader with good formal engineering or science-based qualification(s) and several years’ experience in a Design Management role in one or more of the following sectors: Instrumentation (of any type, but typically, analytical, industrial, consumer); Optics / Microscopy; Imaging / Photonics; or other sector of relevance. As well as technical management capability the successful candidate would need to have a good working understanding / experience of the materials, processes and methods involved with low to mid volume instrumentation e.g. castings, mouldings, PCB’s etc. This is an excellent and exciting full-time opportunity to join a well-established company, established in 1958. Basic salary IRO £100,000 per annum dependant on experience and benefits include production bonus, pension, private health, life insurance, 24 days holiday and development opportunities. Working hours are 40 hours per week: Monday to Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm with half an hour lunch break, with flexibility on the start and finish times.

As Design Manager / Head of Design you will manage and support all aspects of the company’s current products and new products in development.

The key functions of this role are:

· Leading design projects from conception to completion, ensuring adherence to specifications and timelines.

· Collaborating with CAD/CAM Manufacturing and Production Engineers to optimize designs for manufacturing.

· Managing engineering change processes and leading design reviews across relevant departments.

· Providing personnel management and career development support for the Design team, in coordination with HR.

· Maintaining design office systems for data, document, and process control, in compliance with ISO standards.

Design Manager / Head of Design candidate requirements:

· Experience in Design Management ideally within Instrumentation, Optics / Microscopy, Imaging / Photonics.

· Good working understanding / experience of the materials, processes and methods involved with low to mid volume instrumentation e.g. castings, mouldings, PCB’s etc.

· Excellent leadership skills, approachable, supportive, and motivational.

· Formal engineering or science-based qualification(s)
