We are looking for a
Head of Engineered Wood Product Sales - Metsä Wood UK
What's your role in the future Metsä?
The role reports to the UK Sales Director and the successful appointee’s role will provide effective and strategic leadership for the Engineered Wood channel; leveraging Metsä Wood’s long standing in the market and reputation for high quality, service and operational excellence.
This appointment is an opportunity to strengthen the sales leadership team, and therefore the individual will need to contribute to both the overall sales strategy and culture whilst also leading the development and execution of the channel sales performance.
Leading a direct team of 3 and a total of 12 in the channel, you will provide the necessary challenge, inspiration, guidance and support which ensures creative and increasingly sustainable, accelerating growth across a growing customer base.
A perspective on the Engineered Wood channel:
  • The channel is very exciting given there is plenty of headroom in the industry which is providing plenty of growth potential through our Group products such as I joist, Kerto LVL, Spruce Plywood, Birch Plywood and Industrial/joinery sales. Currently we split the team into direct Kerto and Plywood sales direct from the mill and indirect UK account management with our customer base of distributors, manufacturers and Housebuilders etc. There is also further opportunity to grow scale and partnerships within this channel by working closely with our colleagues in Central Europe and Australia in order to develop and grow a distributor network for the plant in Kings Lynn
Your main responsibilities include also:
  • Lead the formulation and delivery of the short and long term Engineered Wood channel strategy delivering agreed commercial targets of customer and product mix, market share goals, price targets and customer service levels. There is full ownership of the channel’s sales P&L and the annual accountability of ensuring a stretching but achievable budget which is committed to by all stakeholders
  • Drive up Metsä channel intel and customer agenda which builds strong and sustainable relationships with key trade partners that in turn accelerate customer engagement and grows the number of long term sustainable contracts in place
  • Can take a thoughtful and creative approach to the product range of the future so they are always relevant to the market and Metsä is effective in securing the trade’s understanding in why they choose to work with Metsä and its portfolio. Ultimately, Metsä’s customer proposition becomes market leading for the sectors in which it plays including the establishment of a successful NPD pipeline and the appropriate level of participation in industry digital and e-commerce routes to market
  • Identify new market opportunities and develop robust and compelling business proposals which are supported by the total business and lead to Metsä winning them effectively and they become a sustainable addition to the ongoing business portfolio
  • Establishes a wide internal and external network to enable, accelerate and embed best practice and support for Metsä ’s channel ambitions and strategies
  • Contributes to the recruitment, retention and development of a high performing and capable team who are engaged and united behind a common vision which successfully achieves the sales strategies. Can role model the behaviours needed within a ‘performance driven and forward looking culture’ through coaching and building up ‘judgement, drive and influence’ within the team itself
  • Supports the establishment of highly effective Commercial Finance and Ops partnerships through commitment and behaviours relating to both the budget creation & management and forecasting processes
  • Lead the Technical, Engineering and Design teams to ensure Metsä’s offering is fully compliant with regulation and building standards, alongside creating a culture that focuses on continuous improvement and closely partnering with the commercial team to enhance commercial offering and adapt to changing market trends

  • Degree or equivalent education
  • Experience in building products/ materials with a high performance track record within the specific or related sectors
  • A demonstrable track record in building a growth agenda with the necessary detail to execute it successfully
  • Customer orientated and creative: willing to be hands on with the trade but still committed to building and leading from behind with results coming in from the capability of the team and the active partnership with the customers
  • Effective and rounded commercial negotiation skills which create sustainable end to end and conditional agreements
  • The ability to provide leadership and coaching to the team so they are an advantage over the competitors and this is valued by both the customer and the individuals who stay engaged, agile and energised in delivering great results
  • Culturally sensitive and adaptable
