Job description

Background: The UK Space Agency:

The UK Space Agency (UKSA) is an executive agency of the Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) and provides technical advice on the government’s space strategy, supporting the UK space sector to deliver the government’s vision.

Space is a part of everyday life. Satellites underpin our national economy, from agriculture and banking to aviation and shipping, and support our national security. Space science provides critical data to understand and address global challenges such as climate change, while missions to explore our solar system unite nations and advance humanity’s horizons.

We support a thriving space sector in the UK, which generates an annual income of £16.5 billion and employs 47,000 people across the country.

Through our portfolio of programmes and projects, we encourage the development of national space capabilities and are an early-stage investor in space research and development. We also promote the UK space sector’s interests and achievements; make connections to join up industry and academia; and represent the UK in international space programmes.

We have a powerful global voice, partnering with institutions across the world, including the European Space Agency.

This job is about developing our policy and delivering the UK’s strategy for our membership of the European Space Agency.

It is about ensuring that the UK can influence European Space Agency and its member states to offer the policies and future programmes that are in the best interests of the UK. This post will also work closely with colleagues in the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and across Whitehall to deliver key policies and strategies such as in the National Space Strategy.

The post holder will also be responsible for influencing European Space Agency’s international policy through membership of the European Space Agency International Relationship Committee and Council meetings.

As well as working closely with the European Space Agency, the post holder will need to be able to provide expert content and advice to senior leaders and Ministers as needed. A core part of the work will be about setting out the requirements for funding for European Space Agency Ministerial investment rounds and scenario planning against wider government priorities and objectives. Vital to the success of this role will be coordinating activities across the UK Space Agency which are linked to our investments in the European Space Agency.

In a Ministerial year (CMIN 25) the post holder will lead on the choices for the UK’s European Space Agency investments, the negotiation of this investment and the rationale for this investment.
