Job description

The UK Government Relations Director is a key influencer and contributor to the Group's business success by fostering a deep understand of the Government Relations priorities of LSEG businesses and gaining the support of UK and international governments for the Group's strategic, political and commercial objectives as well as communicating the Group's position on a range of public policy issues.
This is achieved by maintaining and developing relationships with UK and international politicians, diplomatic staff, opinion formers and civil servants; and by strategically coordinating across the Group to ensure that commercial objectives are effectively represented.
The role has two roles reporting into it, one based in Sri Lanka, one based in London. These provide support in resourcing for analysis and briefings.
Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure a deep understanding of business needs with respect to UK Government Relations. Provide Government Relations support for commercial pitches, including participating in client meetings when needed.
    Represent the Group externally in meetings, speaking events and conference.
  • Research, monitor and interpret relevant political and policy developments and produce internal analysis, consultation responses, and internal and external briefings as required.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive strategies to gain the support of UK and international stakeholders to support stated commercial and policy goals.
  • Develop and maintain an appropriate network of relevant UK and international officials, civil servants, diplomats, regulators, politicians, opinion formers, trade bodies and other stakeholders to support LSEG's strategic, political and commercial priorities, often working in strong partnership with these external stakeholders.
  • Build more of a commercial focus for the function, looking at UK government agencies as clients and how this relationship can be leveraged to develop direct enterprise opportunities.
  • Ensure excellent political and diplomatic judgement, informed through engagement with external stakeholders and maintaining a solid understanding of international political and economic affairs.
  • Build excellent internal relationships with key stakeholders to understand business objectives and coordinate across different departments including capital markets, post trade and information services.
  • Produce briefings and speeches for senior LSEG executives, drive high profile events with key stakeholders, proactively source speaking and meeting opportunities to support LSEG objectives.

Candidate Profile / Key Skills
  • Educated to degree level with a strong interest and / or background in international affairs, economics or public policy.
  • A keen interest in and ability to understand and articulate complex financial services issues is desirable.
  • Experience of working in Westminster, Whitehall, or international governments or organisations.
  • Excellent diplomatic skills and ability to understand the motivations of others.
  • Proven ability to manage and priorities work according to business goals and deadlines.
  • Comfortable networking and building contacts.
  • Proven experience of communicating, both orally and in writing to the highest standards, preferably with senior executives, politicians, diplomats and other individuals.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the pressures and requirements of working for senior decision makers.
  • Record of achieving policy change or commercial goals.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to support senior executives in their external engagement.
