Head of Media

The role

We work with doctors, patients and other stakeholders to support good, safe patient care across the UK. We are looking for a Head of Media who can help us tell our story in the media about the important work we do, the steps we are taking to improve how we do that work, and the valuable insights we have to share about workforce and patient safety issues.

As our Head of Media, you’ll lead our excellent media relations team based in London and Manchester. You’ll provide effective advice to the organisation on how we can influence and manage media coverage about the GMC’s work. You’ll maintain and grow effective relationships within the media. In everything you do, you’ll demonstrate an inclusive approach to leadership and be a positive role model for the GMC’s values of excellence, fairness and collaboration.

We’re looking for someone has strong experience of:

  • leading and organising a busy media relations team in a high-profile organisation, ideally at a national level
  • developing, delivering and evaluating strategies aimed at influencing and managing media coverage
  • providing advice at a senior level on how media issues should be managed
  • building credibility and effective working relationships with journalists.

And, as this is a media relations role, it goes without saying that we need someone who has highly developed communications skills. You should have the ability to write compelling messages and copy for a range of Media content.

This is a hybrid role between home working and office working, you’ll work a minimum of 1 day a week in the office. You will be required to attend meetings in person in both London and Manchester. We may ask you to attend the office on additional days where necessary and during the induction period.

We are happy to support a range of flexible working options. Flexible working requests will be considered in line with the policy. However, please note, due to the role requirements, the minimum working hours are 32 hours and weekend and on call work is required.
