Job description

Salary (Band 1): £102,554 - £110,622 with a generous employers' pension contribution to the civil service pension scheme. (Plus an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable)
Location: Bootle/Cheltenham/London with flexible working options
A regulator like no other.
A role that's unique.
Join us at the Office of Nuclear Regulation.
The challenge
The Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) is an evolving public corporation. Essentially, we're responsible for regulating nuclear site health and safety, nuclear safety, security, safeguards and the transport of radioactive materials. As a Head of Nuclear Security Regulation, you'll be working for a world-class regulator, with innovation at its core. If you want to make a difference through a unique organisation - read on.
The role
As the senior Nuclear Security inspector in your assigned regulatory area, you will plan and deliver the full range of Nuclear Security regulatory activities. Heading up a small team of specialist Nuclear Security inspectors, you'll scrutinise physical security, personnel security and CS&IA (Cyber Security and Information Assurance) at various sites and facilities.
A capable leader and manager, you'll conduct effective and efficient regulation across the UK's civil nuclear industry, coordinating your efforts with those of your Safety and Safeguards colleagues. Working together, you'll spot trends, identify useful intelligence and deliver key deliverables within the sub-division and regulatory divisional plans.
At this level, you'll also have the chance to contribute to the strategic direction of the regulatory division and engage with senior contacts industry-wide. If you want a role where you can develop strategic approaches to achieve high security standards, join us at ONR.
The person
Experience in the nuclear industry would be ideal - however, it isn't essential. We're looking for a leader from a high-hazard industry who is ready to take on ONR training. Whatever your background, you'll need a degree, an accredited level 6 qualification or equivalent in a relevant subject. We'll also be looking for membership of a relevant professional institution (or equivalent experience).
To make the grade, you'll need excellent knowledge of security risk management and have extensive experience in managing the delivery of physical security, personnel security and CS&IA. You must also be an expert on current and emerging security threats, with strong analytical skills. However, while technical expertise is important, so are people skills. You'll be a leader, not just a manager, winning the trust of contacts as well as your team. Credibility will therefore be essential in your work every day. You must be able to influence dutyholders, inspire team members, and share and collaborate with colleagues. With your excellent interpersonal skills and strategic mindset, you'll ensure high regulatory standards.
If you haven't worked in the nuclear industry, we're ready to bring you up to speed. Our structured training programme will ensure you can make an impact as soon as you join our team.
Please note that travel, both national and international, will be part of the role.
The rewards
We offer competitive salaries at the ONR, with this role attracting a salary of £102,554 - £110,622 plus an additional £4,052 London Weighting Allowance if applicable. Furthermore, you'll be eligible for a substantial Civil Service Pension scheme (including ill-health retirement and lump sum family benefits), and generous holiday entitlement.
About us
ONR is a Public Corporation with a mission to protect society by securing safe nuclear operations. Our staff are drawn from a wide range of professional backgrounds with specialist inspectors to deliver our core business including civil engineering, radiological protection, human factors, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering and nuclear physics. Together they're involved in everything from assessing safety documentation, inspecting nuclear sites and communicating our decisions, to training new recruits and representing the UK and ONR nationally and internationally.
