Head of Operations (012ww) – Carlisle - £35K + Benefits
Our Client provides a safe place for animals in their time of need. They look to rehome dogs, cats, and equines and work to support good, long-term healthy relationships between animals and their owners out in the community.

Head of Operations
Our client is an Animals’ Charity they are looking for an experienced Head of Operations to lead the Charity’s corporate operations.
This new role will lead our Operations Directorate, maintaining and managing our physical environment and valued resources.
The Head of Operations will line manage our Finance, Facilities (including H&S) Reception, HR, and Volunteer Teams ensuring the promotion of a positive and supportive environment and experience for our animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
The ideal candidate will play a pivotal role in overseeing the day-to-day operations of our organisation, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and the successful execution of programs and initiatives.
This position requires a passion for making a positive impact, strong organisational skills, and the ability to lead and inspire a dedicated team.
Main Duties
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for Charities operations, ensuring alignment with the overall strategy, mission, and objectives.
- Line manage and develop our Finance, HR, Reception, Facilities and Volunteering departments.
- Ensure that our premises are safe, in good order, attractive and fit for purpose through the work of our Facilities team and day-to-day team practices.
- Lead the appropriate recruitment, training and ongoing support for volunteers and staff across the Charity ensuring compliance with policies and that all individuals have the opportunity to thrive and develop.
- Collaborate with the other members of the executive team to develop and implement operational policies, procedures, and best practices in line with legislation and industry standards.
- Lead on Health and Safety across the Charity ensuring compliance with policies and that safety is at the forefront of our activity.
- Ensure our Finance function operates efficiently and accurately, complying with financial regulation and our audit practices.
- Seek opportunities to improve our sustainability in terms of cost control, recycling, carbon footprint and waste management.
- Develop, implement, and maintain quality assurance protocols.
- Ensure that operational activities remain on time and within budget.
- Identify and mitigate operational risks, implementing measures to safeguard Charities reputation and assets.
- Increase the efficiency of Charities processes and procedures to enhance our internal capacity and both the Return on Investment and the Return on Objective.
- Enhance the customer experience, both animal and human, to ensure animal welfare and income generation departments are able to maximise opportunity.
- Report to CEO and present reports to the Trustees, internal and external stakeholders as required.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including donors, partners, local businesses, and community organisations.
- Collaborate with other departments to enhance cross-functional communication and efficiency.
- Deputise for the CEO as necessary.
Person Specification
Essential
- At least 3 years’ experience operations management and business experience.
- IT skills (including MS Office and databases)
- Strong understanding of non-profit operations, programme management, HR, and financial oversight
- Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
- Exceptional organisational and multitasking abilities
- Demonstrated success in building and maintaining collaborative relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong understanding of Health and Safety legislation
- Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, and compliance standards
- Experience of working with volunteers
- Full UK manual driving licence.
Desirable
- Experience of working within the non-profit or charity sector
- Understanding of land management and DEFRA land management programmes.
- Detailed direct experience in at least one of the departmental areas within the Operations.Directorate
- A strong affinity with the aims and objectives of the Charity.
