Job Introduction Media Operations is one of two main departments within the Technology & Media Operations Group. Media Operations is at the heart of teams delivering incredible content across all our platforms for all audiences. Comprising around nine hundred people, it manages the craft and production operations for the BBC’s news, radio, and sport services across London, Salford, and Birmingham - capturing, editing, and producing our output 24x7 for TV, radio, and online. Our team are experts in their field with exceptional technical, operational and production creativity at their heart. Working closely together with our news, sport and content colleagues, we co-create all content reaching millions of people across the UK and the World daily. Additionally, the team is responsible for the management of production services, stores, some audio, fleet and OB bases in England. Main Responsibilities This role will be part of the leadership team for Media Operations and will report to the Director. With responsibility for 50-70 staff, this role will be responsible for the operational production of major Outside Broadcasts (OBs) from News events for Elections to the Proms, Glastonbury and the Olympics, as well as dry hire, stores and base operations. Specifically, you will:

  • Be an expert in locations or operational facilities and will have strong practical experience in one or more of these disciplines
  • Ensure that you deliver an effective base operations team that consistently delivers to the needs of our craft and operations teams and our editorial colleagues
  • Ensure that our base operations always have the correct provision of equipment and can source equipment at short notice is essential
  • Have an in-depth knowledge of technical and craft kit suppliers as this will be essential to delivering a consistent location and facilities operation across a range of sites
  • Be aware of what the market has to offer in this area and be able to demonstrate that you keep abreast of technology advancements and changes
  • This role will be critical in future-proofing the Media Operations teams’ tooling and equipment in line with the BBCs Technology strategy
  • Working with Fleet Managers to ensure that our OB equipment and vehicles are suitable for our broadcast needs
  • Working with Head of Department, Media Operations, to ensure that we have a long-term strategy in relation to our overall fleet
  • Work with other colleagues in other divisions to maximise the use of our fleet and minimise the need to hire OB trucks and vehicles
  • Rationalise our inventory holding locations/stores for both consumables and equipment and build a plan that is most effective
  • Maintain close and trusted working relationships across multiple areas: with senior leaders across the Technology Group, with senior stakeholders in the content divisions, and with third party suppliers
  • Be responsible, with other members of the Media Operations leadership team, for prioritisation and allocation of resources and budgets to meet the business’s priorities
  • Responsible, with other members of the leadership team, for delivering the best career opportunities for our teams, which may include short swaps, or strategic longer term moves that support the BBCs Across the UK strategy or any other long-term content plans
Are You The Right Candidate?
  • Demonstrable experience of 2nd line leadership of a large team with experience of successfully advocating D&I (Diversity & Inclusion) initiatives
  • Demonstrable experience & understanding of the key requirements to deliver complex outside broadcast and the inherent requirements in doing so
  • Proven track record of delivering cost efficient and effective BBC inhouse broadcast services
  • Demonstrable knowledge of innovation and advancements in audio and visual acquisition technology, with emphasis on the technology used outside permanent studio set ups
  • Demonstrable experience or knowledge of managing location bases
  • Demonstrable experience of Fleet Management and the inherent requirements therein
  • Demonstrable experience of working in a complex matrix environment managing multiple senior stakeholder
