The Opportunity: Head of People Operations – Hybrid, Purfleet, Essex.


This is an exciting opportunity to join our brilliant HR team here at Carpetright and make a real difference. We’re looking for a well-rounded generalist with HR Operations experience at a management level to support the development of a great colleague experience by ensuring that the HR engine room (including HR Services- Payroll and HR Admin, Employee Relations, and Talent Acquisition) runs like clockwork and that all our HR initiatives are effectively implemented and managed to create the best outcomes.


About The Opportunity:


  • You’ll take ownership for the effective implementation of initiatives including the ongoing management and monitoring of impact, whilst making recommendations for enhancement as necessary across HR Services, Employee Relations and Talent Acquisition
  • Lead, coach and motivate the teams, building a winning culture consistent with the values of the company and ensuring appropriate communication and goal setting.
  • You will take ownership of the performance management process. Working with the HRBP’s to ensure that the performance of colleagues across the business is appropriately measured, monitored and managed in line with agreed protocols.
  • You’ll own the probationary review process – ensuring that it is fit for purpose and adopted by management
  • Manage the development, documentation, and implementation of joined up working practices/processes across each of the HR disciplines ensuring that they are efficient, user friendly, customer focused and legally compliant.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and ongoing management of legally compliant people policies across the HR disciplines
  • Responsibility for the deployment of the reward strategy, including pay benchmarking, and monitoring the effectiveness of reward programmes and make recommendations
  • With a focus on continuous improvement oversee the HR Services (Payroll & HR Admin) function. Work with the HR Services Manager to improve service to colleagues and ensure efficiency of process
  • Be the score keeper. Develop user friendly people stats that enables the business to manage its resource effectively and measure the effectiveness of People initiatives
  • You will oversee Employee Relations activity, ensuring actions taken are consistent and legally compliant

About Your Experience:


  • You’ll need to have well-rounded generalist HR operations experience (including Payroll, HR Admin, Employee Relations, Business Partnering and Talent Acquisition) at a management level within in a multi-site retail or similar environment
  • A strong leader, mentor, and coach of People
  • You’ll have the credibility and gravitas to operate as No2 to the HR Director
  • Experience of policy development & process re-engineering
  • You’ll be experienced in managing reward programmes, Employee Relations and running a payroll
  • Experience of developing & implementing performance management processes and implementing succession plans
  • You will be highly analytical and a whizz with data, MI and reporting
  • Project management experience would be ideal
  • Experience of HRIS implementation and usage is desirable

About You:


  • Degree qualified supported by a relevant HR qualification at level 5 or equivalent
  • You will be action oriented with a pragmatic approach
  • Positive, self-motivated and the ability to work at pace, with a sense of humour
  • You’ll definitely have a passion for people and delivering service excellence
  • Well-developed time management, prioritisation, and planning skills
  • Confident user of Microsoft Office (Word / Excel / PowerPoint / Outlook etc)
