Job description

Are you a high-achieving fundraiser, business development or philanthropy advice professional with a deep knowledge of the charity sector? Are you passionate about philanthropy and what it can achieve? If so, this role is a fantastic opportunity to lead the continued growth of The Charity Service and make your mark in the world of Philanthropy.

About us

The Charity Service helps major donors to successfully manage their charitable giving. Our core services include Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) and strategic philanthropy advice. We also manage a small portfolio of grant programmes for Greater Manchester. Having refined our strategy over recent years, we now have ambitious plans to engage with more philanthropists.

The role

The Head of Philanthropy will lead a small team to promote the charity’s philanthropy services, attract major donors and manage ongoing donor relations.

The key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Developing and implementing strategies to grow the number of high-net-worth individuals using the charity’s philanthropy services.
  • Overseeing the management of donor-advised funds, coordinating our small team to deliver a high quality service to philanthropists.
  • Managing the provision of strategic philanthropy advice to high-net-worth individuals, engaging specialist advisors where required.
  • Managing marketing and communications to further develop and promote The Charity Service’s brand.
  • Supporting the Board of Trustees to refine strategy and monitor progress.

About you

To apply, you'll need to be able to clearly demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of the charity sector.
  • Strong leadership and line management skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, networking and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to adapt your style for different contexts (e.g. social media content, presenting proposals, writing formal reports).
  • An ability to be strategic and effective at a high level, but also willing and able to do detailed and hands-on work.
  • An ability to work remotely under your own initiative and manage time effectively.
  • A high level of competency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Location

Most of our staff work remotely, with some travel required to our Manchester office for team meetings. Staff have the option of working from our Manchester office if they wish.

For the Head of Philanthropy role, you will be required to travel to Manchester to attend in-person staff team meetings once a month and trustees’ meetings every quarter.

Benefits

We are committed to providing our employees with a supportive and engaging environment. As well as ongoing development and training, we offer:

  • Flexible working arrangements that allow you to adapt your working hours to fit alongside family and other life commitments.
  • A standard 35-hour working week for full-time positions.
  • 25 days holiday entitlement, plus the usual public bank holidays in England and Wales for full-time positions (pro-rated for part-time positions).
  • 5% employer pension contribution (with 5% employee contribution).

Our values

The Charity Service is an independent not-for-profit charity driven by our mission and values. We believe in philanthropy that supports charities to achieve their mission, builds strong, open and trusting relationships, and respects and values diversity.

We know that diverse teams make better decisions, and are more creative and stimulating to work in. We aim to foster an inclusive working environment where every individual, regardless of background, feels valued and empowered to contribute.
