Who we are

West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) is an ambitious and progressive organisation, always seeking to be at the forefront of best practice as both a service provider and employer. We are innovative in our approach to making the West Midlands Safer, Stronger and Healthier.  Recognised as the most inclusive employer in the Top 50 Inclusive Employers list, for an unprecedented second year in a row, WMFS is committed to harnessing the power of diversity within our workforce in order to deliver the very best service to the diverse communities of the West Midlands.

What you’ll do

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Fire Officer, you will have responsibility for developing the strategic aims and direction of Prevention alongside the day-to-day leadership for the function.  WMFS has a particular focus on applying a public health approach to reducing the risk and vulnerability to fire and other emergencies through reducing health inequalities in the community. You will be able to strategically consider the role of West Midlands Fire Service within this agenda to enable you to influence effectively both internally and externally.

As a strategic and influential leader, you will have a key role in shaping the future of the organisation; you will always be pushing to either transform or continually improve the service our communities receive.  As a member of our Strategic Enabling Team (SET) your contribution and judgement will support the delivery of our strategy and enable teams across the organisation.

What you’ll bring

This is an opportunity for an ambitious and high performing individual who wishes to be considered for a role within our Strategic Enabling Team, as Head of Prevention.  It is essential that you demonstrate a detailed understanding of the dynamically changing landscape of Prevention, health inequalities and safeguarding.

You will demonstrate leadership capability that enables a highly motivated and diverse team of professionals.  By engaging with colleagues right across the Service, Sector and external partners, your ability to work collaboratively with others will be significantly enhanced.

With a proven track record of delivering high performance, you will enable the delivery of strategic objectives within both your functional role and as a Project Executive. As Project Executive you will proactively apply project fundamentals, regularly assessing progress of your projects. With the highest degree of commitment, you will thrive in an agile environment and have a drive for continuous improvement.

With excellent communication skills, you will have the ability to draft high level reports, as well as produce and deliver presentations. You will be flexible in meeting the requirements of the role, be proactive in influencing change, and be highly motivated about making a difference to our communities. You will not be constrained by accepted ways of working and will be tenacious and resilient in your pursuit of excellence. With the ability to balance conflicting demands, you will be flexible in your working arrangements and have the vision to innovate and be creative.

If you wish to be considered for this exciting opportunity, you should submit your curriculum vitae, alongside a personal statement aligned to the job summary for the role, outlining your skills, experiences, and personal behaviours.
