Job description

A superb opportunity to join and lead our executive team. A successful appointee will grow with the charity, with the potential for the role to develop into that of Chief Executive Officer over the next two years.

The post is a permanent one. The anticipated hours are 37.5 per week which can be flexed to meet both the charity’s and your needs.

The charity is overhauling several ongoing projects and some infrastructure. Thus candidates should be able to manage change and take people along with them in a collaborative, consultative way. The role would suit someone with broad experience of the UK charity sector and of change management. It will evolve as the organisation evolves, and will be wide ranging in nature. Our successful candidate will be a competent manager, a practical shaper, and prepared to work closely with staff, volunteers, fundraisers, members, trustees and other stakeholders.

Job description

Fundamentally, you will provide practical assistance and operational management to deliver the charity’s strategy, vision and objectives. We pride ourselves on being a highly inclusive organisation, a principle which you will continue and build upon. You will report directly to the board and line manage a growing team (currently 3 staff members).

You will perform a wide range of functions embracing HR, reporting, finance, fundraising, advocacy, event planning, marketing, and administration, amongst others. Principal tasks include but are not restricted to the following:

1. Leadership and management

Lead the ADSHG executive team demonstrating inclusive leadership and a collaborative approach.

Liaise with the Chair and board ensuring that day to day operations contribute to the delivery of our strategic plans.

Line manage (manage, review and appraise) and ensure the pastoral care of employees and volunteers, applying good HR practice, policies and procedures as appropriate.

Monitor and report to the board of trustees on the financial health of the charity.

Control expenditure in line with the budgets approved by the board.

Contribute to fundraising efforts.

Guide the board where appropriate to help ensure that the charity discharges its constitutional and legal obligations.

Ensure that the charity has or develops the resources (human, material and financial) it needs to operate as effectively as possible.

Represent the charity at events appropriately and professionally.

Work closely and transparently with the Treasurer, bank, bookkeeper and accountant to ensure effective recording of all income and expenditure, and associated administration.

2. Sustainability

Develop new and existing income streams for the charity.

Steward existing donors, sponsors and supporters, and nurture new ones.

3. Governance

Provide recommendations to the board on organisational structure.

Develop policy proposals for board discussion and decision.

Monitor and advise on the role of freelancers, suppliers and volunteers.

Report monthly to the board on the charity’s operations, budgets and achievements.

4. Promotion

Develop the charity’s public profile, influence key stakeholders and develop or maintain good relationships with other charities, private sector agencies, and the general public.

Direct marketing and communications activity.

Maintain effective networks with principal supporters and stakeholders.

Maintain effective networks with other relevant organisations and charities.

Seek opportunities to expand and promote the role of the charity.

5. Projects and activities

To contribute directly to project work designed to advance our charitable objects.

Manage and take part in events run by the charity.

Take part in other stakeholders’ events relevant to our work.

Make recommendations for the development of other projects and activities.

Support the Addison’s shop.

Support and promote our membership programme.

Any other reasonable activity commensurate with the role, as requested by the board.
